Wetlands with the dSLR (big share)

I took my loaner DSLR out today, to the nearby wetlands. My goal was to try getting used to a DSLR, rather than to get the perfect photo, so the kids are dressed for cold weather and play, not photos. And the poses and composition on these aren't top-notch by any means... but I'm psyched anyway, just for the sheer joy of seeing lovely depth of field on these! This camera feels awkward to me and there's a lot to get used to, but it's a fun start. CC always welcome, but not necessary!

Settings were f3.2 and f3.5 on all except the one on the rock, which was f2.5. I got a bit chicken about going too wide open and not nailing focus. SS was 1/600 or higher, and ISO was 200.

(something is wrong with DD's eye in this one, not sure if she was rubbing it or what... sorry if it looks weird)

And a couple of snaps just because I thought they were cute:

It's actually making me really bummed out at the same time that I can hardly contain my excitement, because I know I have to give it back! But if you're not totally bored and still checking this thread, here's some more pics from today:

The thing that amazed me when I first got my DSLR was just how fast it took the pictures. I was getting so many great shots because I wasn't waiting on the camera to actually take the picture.

Thanks, Amy -- and everyone!

One of the biggest bonuses to borrowing this camera is that they have a 50mm 1.8 prime lens on it, so that's what I've been using. Their kit lens is broken and though it's apparently still useable, it has a lot of issues; and I was more interested in working with the 50mm anyway, since portraiture is one of the biggest areas where a P&S just cannot do anything decent.

You guys are so kind! Smile Well, I was visiting a friend with a newborn and dying to take photos of the baby today, but it didn't work out... But here are a few more from yesterday that I really like but didn't post because I've already posted so many!!

BTW, I have to say, another thing I'm proud of is that a lot of these are in-camera crops... I'm getting a lot better at getting the shot I want in-camera!

I call this one "Mamarazzi" (apparently there's a book by that name, I've been told, and it stuck in my head), as it reminds me of celebrities ducking from the Paparazzi. Biggrin

You are doing so great Biggrin If I were you, I'd probably go through a bit of a mourning phase once I had to give up that camera.

Yeah. Sad It's a loaner from someone in our church, and I'm not sure when they want it back, so I'll be taking it back to church tomorrow just in case. I'm hoping they'll suggest I keep it a bit longer, though! Now that I know that I can use a dSLR and know firsthand the potential of it to do the kinds of images I always admire here, I'm so sad to give it up!

Do you think there is a chance you can buy it from them? I know you want one, and I so remember lurking on this board for AGES before I finally was able to purchase a camera. My hubby saved up money without me knowing and we paid 1/2 cash and 1/2 went on the Best Buy card. They have great interest rate programs.

I don't think they want to sell it; they only lent it to me while they're test-driving a compact that they want for outings with their kids (something light and small), but I think they want to keep the SLR for portraits and stuff. Though it sounds like they rarely use it, so who knows. If they're happy with what they eventually buy, they may decide to sell it. It's fairly old, and the kit lens is broken, so they would probably give it to us for a good deal if they did want to sell.
