Default Yay, new lens! (And other new gear)

DH got an awesome deal (50% off) on a 55-250mm lens, and surprised me with it! Given that my birthday just passed and we are always on a tight budget, I was so surprised, but DH does have a hard time passing up a deal!

I have a good friend locally who loves shooting wildlife, so I'm psyched to be able to get a bit better shots with a longer lens, but also to use it for some portraits with more background compression and such is pretty cool too. I tried it out last night when we went to visit my brother on his acreage and got some fun (and goofy) shots of Nora near the golden hour.

(TANGENT: I sure am discovering that Nora is MUCH more willing to have her picture taken if I ask her to DO something. She does not like merely posing and smiling, but she will cooperate if she has a task! The first one so totally breaks the ROT but I couldn't get back far enough fast enough. She has a short attention span!)

My fave, she is just so silly:

And you know me, since I'm sharing, I always have more, also taken with the new lens. The kids got tractor rides from my brother, and we had dinner on his patio outside. He looks like a redneck here (his words, not mine) but is actually a financial editor big-shot... he's just in his farmer clothes.

ETA: I also got my tri-fold grey card that I ordered from Amazon and am so happy with it. I did two photos recently setting my white balance first with the grey card, and they are both bang-on SOOC without blown reds or any colour issues. Nice!

I miss my 55-250! I may have to break out the Rebel again sometime just so I can get that compression again

These are great photos! Love that one of your brother. And awesome about the grey card! I have been telling myself for months that I should really get one and use it...

The grey card really seems to work great. I haven't tried it on portraits in some of the challenging lighting situations, like at my brother's property with all of the yellow colour cast from the meadow, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the results there.

The lens is great, I admit! I'd probably give it up for a 5D MIII though but I'm just loving having a bit more versatility with my lenses now.

I tried a DIY expo disc, but it didn't work very well. The real thing would be nice, that's for sure!!

    I got this gray card:

You can just use the gray panel (fold the other two in), which is simplest and works well, but I also like that it has the white/black, which is helpful for processing sometimes too.
