    Default Potty Training

    Here we go!

When Alex takes a bath I've started asking him, towards the end, if he can pee for me (in the tub). The last two times he has! Each time I gave him a sticker. Next step is to hole-punch a bunch of colorful dots and make peeing in the toilet a game. No idea if he'll take to it.

How did it work with Raymond Virginia? What did you do - what worked what didn't with him?

I have to say Evan doesn't seem "there" yet. He seems interested when I go to the bathroom and now says "go potty" but I don't think he really understands when I go what I'm doing.

That's actually a really tough question to answer. Here's a rundown of how it went

leading up to PTing we watched a lot of "Once Upon a Potty". We read it a lot, too. We had a potty and sat him on it occasionally, took him into the bathroom with us, etc.

3-28-10 (27 1/2 mo): He was in the tub and looked like he was about to poop, so I put him on the potty. He peed and pooped.

3-29-10 I took off his diaper and had a potty in the livingroom. I had a piece of paper on which I noted successes and accidents. He got better as the day went on. But, basically, he knew what to do. He got a sticker each time he went.

    3-30-10 No accidents all day.

At that point, he was mostly good for a while as long as we were home. He would pee and poop in the potty and even empty it out. Then one day he pooped on the floor and it was all over. We didn't scold him or anything. It was weird. I don't recall how long the good spell lasted, but after that nothing we did could get him using the potty again.

I gave up for a while while I dealt with m/s and such. Then in Nov started up again. still nothing worked. In early Jan I hold punched a lot of colorful dots, dropped a few in the potty, and told him if he peed on them I'd give him a sticker. It worked. Then we set the following "rules"
    1. we'd go to the potty every hour of so and I'd give him dots to pee on
    2. If he peed he got to flush and put a sticker on a piece of paper on the wall
    3. If he was still dry from the last trip he got a chocolate chip, too
    4. brush off accidents

He took to it really well, and started objecting to diapers. A few days later I sent him to preschool in a diaper and they told me he used the potty all morning. After that it was just underwear. He had few accidents and started going longer between bathroom trips.
Poop took months. What finally worked was finding the right bribe. He know what I wanted, but he didn't want to do it.

I definitely think the first steps is getting him to pee on comand. it shows he knows what you want and what he's doing. The tub is great for that. So is running around naked. I did that with Alex and when he peed I'd say "You're going peepee! Look at that!"

I am tempted to start Brekke but with the new baby I just don't dare right now. Plus she has no idea when she's about to pee and she doesn't mind sitting in a dirty diaper Oh well, hopefully soon.

Virginia - Peeing on dots sounds like a neat game for teaching boys to pee, good luck.

Katie - Are you comfortable letting Evan use a potty while you are on it? I say give it a go, I'm all for early potty training.

Natalie really just needed a routine to learn (gotta love routines) both her School and I would take her to the potty on a regular basis at first, eventually she learned when she needed to go and just went. We do have some accidents still because she gets involved in play and doesn't want to go to the washroom, but if we find some thing to motivate her to use the washroom then she'll go, often we just let her bring the toy she is playing with to the washroom.

I've been holding Luke on the toilet (without an extra baby seat) and he'll pee. Then he get two chocolate chips. I've even got him wiping and flushing. No poops yet, and he only uses the toilet maybe once or twice day. It's more of a fun game than anything else.

Cari - sounds like he's ready to go! Have you considered just putting him in underwear for a day and taking him every 30-60 minutes?

Hmm Aiden was doing really well and then we left for the weekend and went to Great Wolf Lodge and I've basically quit. He will pee in the potty when I take him and definately knows what hes doing. Poops are pretty much hit and miss, mostly miss. I think if I could put him in underwear he'd have the pee part 100% in a couple of days. I'm just too lazy to deal with the poop mess at this point.

Virginia, you think so? I guess I just didn't feel like putting forth the effort because he's still young, but maybe he is ready. He is super baby after all...

They can be surprisingly young when ready, my mother had me trained by 12 months and my sister by 18 months. We missed the window on Dana due to her child care facility, she could have been trained at 15 months, Natalie our laziness is really what delayed the her potty training, she was showing signs really early, in fact she would cry before dirty/wet diapers before 6 months.
