Hospital has the baby and will only release to a funeral home

Has anyone ever experienced that? My baby was 14 weeks. I m/c at home, but the placenta didn't come out completely, and I ended up riding an ambulance to the ER. They took the baby and placenta to the pathology lab, and they will not release to me. I thought it was ridiculous, because if I hadn't needed to go to the ER, I would have my baby's body right now. Anyone experienced this?

Also, I'm at a loss what to do with the body, but I just didn't want to have it thrown away at the hospital.

First of all I am SO so so so sorry for your loss.

I would contact your doc/midwife and ask for their assistance in getting the body released to you. They hold it because it is human tissue, and law states it must be handled properly. I am sure that a few signatures will allow your baby back with you. I would be a thorn in their side until then... protocol or not she is still a human and deserves to be with her family.

When we lost our girl, (15 weeks) we took her home and buried her on our own. We had a private ceremony and just celebrated her short life. She is in our In'laws garden, and we can visit her any time. That really helps to be able to visit her when we need to.

I really am praying hard you and your family. I am here via PM if you ever need to talk. :bigarmhug:

Thank you. We contacted the local funeral home, which is owned by a family that my good friend knows. They will contact the hospital and make all the arrangements to get our baby back to us at no charge. They are going to look into the cost of cremation, since we don't have any place nearby we can bury him. They said they can probably do cremation for 1/2 price for us with no additional charges. They were very helpful and understanding.
