natural miscarriage (update in post below- graphic)
I found out on Friday (9.5 weeks) that our baby had no heart beat. We had a strong heartbeat at 7 weeks, but the baby was measuring small, so we were concerned. I had a D&C in 2006 for a missed miscarriage at 11 weeks (baby died around 8 weeks), but I wanted to try to let the miscarriage happen naturally this time. I started mild cramping and light bleeding yesterday.
Is there anyone who's been through a similar ordeal? Do you know what I can expect? How long will I bleed before the miscarriage actually happens? How much is it going to hurt? I'm 10 weeks now, but the baby is measuring 7.5 weeks. I'm having some tightening along with the cramping now and a little more bleeding. Will I pass anything that's recognizable? Or just blood, clots, and tissue? Thank you for helping me with this. I'm a little nervous to go anywhere far because I don't know what's going to happen.

Katy, so sorry, big hugs. Seems a few us have had the same type of loss, I was measuring behind too.
I had a natural miscarriage two years ago but it took something like nearly 1 1/2 months for it to happen (6-7weeks along). It started with cramping and tons of horrible gas pains which were sort of mixed in with contractions (hard to explain but I was miserable). I finally did pass something and knew what it was, the bleeding was bad at first but then like a regular period. I just remember going back week after week to make sure my beta went back to 0. If you started cramping and bleeding, then that's a good sign. I don't wish having to wait nearly 2 months like what I went through because it got so dragged out. Anyway, I don't blame you for staying close to home, I hope things go smoothly for you and the pain and bleeding isn't too bad.
update: warning, this is kind of graphic. I'm posting details in case it might help anyone in a similar situation know what to expect.
I've had cramping on and off since Sunday, and this afternoon, I started having mini-contractions. They increased in intensity over a couple of hours. They started right before DD's nap, so fortunately, I was able to relax. I stayed mostly on the couch, read for a while until I didn't feel like that anymore. The pain was not as bad as I expected, not even as bad as the pain I had after my D&C. I wound up falling asleep, and when I woke up a little while later, the contractions were gone. When I stood up, I felt something pass. I'm pretty sure it was placenta. It was a fairly large piece of tissue, kind of pinkish, 3 in. long and 1.5 in. wide, and not very thick. The shape was irregular. I haven't had any contractions since then, only a little mild cramping, and less bleeding. I really don't think I've passed everything yet, unfortunately. I never saw a sac or embryo, and I only had very small blood clots. I'm going to call my MW's office tomorrow and ask about this. Anyone know how long it can take to finish or what the risks are (infection?) after some time goes by with retained tissue?
I've felt pretty wiped out since then, and I've been eating, drinking and resting mostly. I'm going to bed soon.
My MW said that it may or may not be complete yet, but there's no harm in waiting. So, we'll wait and see, and then do bloodwork in a week or 2, assuming there's no excessive bleeding or anything between now and then.
I feel so worn out physically right now. I haven't bled too excessively, so I don't really know why. I'm going to go lay down.
Im sorry for your loss. I had my D&C yesterday. my ultrasound showed on a sac measuring 5w2d and i was trying to wait for my body to pass it. When I went in on monday i was 8w2d and only had been spotting brown so she said its been 3 weeks and she didnt want me to get an infection so we schedualed it yesterday.
I did a suction D&C and im happy its over. The waiting was emotionally bothering me and the fear on what to expect. Im in barely any pain and only spotting light pink.
I hope whatever you choose it goes well and its as painless as possible.

Unfortunately, waiting is all we can do when it happens naturally. Mine went on for several days and knew when I had passed the placenta. I don't think I was worried about anything being left behind though. Sounds like you have a great midwife watching over you.
I've been having heavier bleeding and am still cramping. I called my MW this morning, and she said it was kind of borderline needing to go to the hospital. I've been kind of woozy. So I rested all day and I'm feeling a bit better. But then my MW called back and said it's good I'm feeling better, but that I might still have not passed everything. So, they're going to keep following up with me over the weekend. I might need to get an u/s next week to see if everything has passed. I might end up with a D&C even after all this. Plus, she told me that the report from my u/s showed the baby was bigger than the doctor had initially told her over the phone, which might be why the m/c is not going really well right now. ugh.
