Possible Blighted Ovum or m/c

I went to the doc this morning for my first visit this pregnancy, and the doc couldn't find the hb with the doppler, so he got the portable u/s machine, and still could not see anything. He sent me asap over the hosp to do another u/s (of course with enough time to chug a ton of water). The u/s there, of course the tech says nothing, but the few parts I could see, my uterus was empty. Thankfully I got to empty my overly full bladder. But he could see little on the u/s, so I got to do a vaginal. When he left the room when he was done for me to change, I looked at the papers sitting there, and it said "No sign of YS or FP," Which I am pretty sure means no yolk sac or fetal pole. Which is what I pretty much figured at this point. He conferred with another radiologist and then got my doc on the line for me to talk to. He said, "There is a pregnancy there, but we are not seeing anything" I asked him what that meant, and he said, I could just be off on my dates, which, I'm sure he is trying to not upset me prematurely, but I am pretty sure that is not the case. After that I went to get bloodwork done, and the doc's office will have those results tomorrow.

I am thinking blighted ovum. I have very regular periods (think I have only ever missed when pregnant), and very heavy periods at that. I have had very minimal spotting (like when I wipe, it's pink) and that happened twice, right arund the time my pd should have started. I have had HEAVY spotting with both previous pregnancies, so I thought nothing of this. I have gained 8lbs in 4wks (and normally, if not on bc or pregnant I do not gain weight). I also have a big ole belly for 9wks, I mean, none of my pants fit (well, I guess that could be the 8lbs lol), but it's all right there. The doc wrote on the u/s referral that I had good IUP, which I am again assuming means Intra uterine presentation, and told me prior to the u/s that it felt like a 9wk uterus. I have also been so terribly nauseaous, I think much more than both pregnancies. Obviously if the baby died at some point, they would see it, and there was nothing. I have had a positive home pgcy test too, so I am thoroughly confused, and will have to wait until tomorrow to find out anything.

Has anyone here had a blighted ovum? How far along were you when diagnosed? I am so confused. TIA!

I have never dealt with that issue before so can offer no advice. I just want to let you know that I hope that it all works out for you. I will keep you in my prayers.

I had what was thought to be a BO....You could see what looked like a shell....yolk sac..no fetal pole. Anyway, I was suppose to be 8 and a half weeks along...

Could your uterus be tilted?? I mean, if the blood work comes back as being good...I would def wait a few more weeks and have another ultrasound...Just to be sure..

Please KUP?? I will be thinking of you :bighug:

Rachel, I had a blighted ovum last month. I was 6 weeks along. My u/s showed a sac with nothing else, which wouldn't necessarily be a major deal at 6 weeks but repeat beta testing showed that my levels were going down. I found tons of info on the internet about it so if you need any links, let me know. But hopefully, you won't need them! Best wishes for you.

Marie, actually my uterus is tilted. But I had u/s with both previous pregnancies at 7 and 8 weeks, and it was easy to see that there was a baby there. Does a vaginal u/s make it easier when the uterus is tilted? Waiting another 30min before I call to get the blood work, so hard just not knowing.

With a tilted uterus, it is very, very difficult for the u/s techs to get a clear view without doing a vaginal ultrasound. I was 8 weeks with a strong hb, but they couldn't get a good picture without the vaginal u/s. Best wishes and keep us updated....

I haven't dealt with this myself, but I'll be thinking of you today. KUP when you get your results.

I had a BO in June. I went in for a u/s at 11 weeks, everything seemed normal until then, no spotting, no cramping, quesiness, sore boobs, weight gain, etc. The u/s showed only a gestational sac with no fetus. My HCG was 22,000. My body had been treating this as if it were a regular pregnancy, and when I went in for a D&C at 12 weeks, I had begun light spotting only on the morning of the procedure.

My u/s tech also told me I might be off on dates, which I knew I wasn't since I chart, but my sky high HCG levels with such a little sac confirmed BO.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this.

well the nurse finally called back, and only had partial bloodwork, my hcg is 29000, which is the low end of normal for 9wks. She did not however have the u/s report, so said she would look for it, and call me back. I told her I suspected it was a blighted ovum, and she didn't say anything, guessing maybe the doc will have to tell me that? And of course, he is out of the office today. Patience is not my virtue today.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with the unknown and possibly a BO or m/c.

I had a BO in Dec 06. I started spotting on Monday, and it turned red on Tuesday so I went in and they couldn't find the hearbeat. I was 11 1/2 weeks. I had an u/s the next morning that revealed an empty sac that had grown to about 7 1/2 weeks but it was empty. My uterus was measuring normal for 11 1/2 weeks and my pants were getting tight as well.

I hope everything turns out ok. KUP

she called back, u/s showed a 6wk sac, which she said does indicate a blighted ovum, but I am headed over to do another blood draw to see what is going on with the hcg. She said she will put my file on his desk and he will see it in the morning, and hopefully we'll get some definitive answers.

Heard back again today...

I just heard back from the nurse. My hcg rose, but just slightly, to 34000. The ob thinks it is not a good pregnancy, as they should see more than a sac at this point. I have to go get a rhogam shot today or tomorrow since I am rh- as well. I am having another u/s on Tuesday (one week from last u/s) to check everything to be sure. At this point, I am just wishing my body would miscarry so I can be done with it.

I am so sorry that you are in a state of limbo right now. I hope you get some answers soon. I'm not a dr but wouldn't your HCG levels be dropping? What do I know...Please kup.

yes, they should be dropping. But at this pt, I think they are also supposed to be doubling, and it was only 6000 increase. But at 9wks they should definitely see more than just a sac. And if I am off on my dates (I highly highly doubt) the sac is at 6wks, and at 6wks they should see more than just a sac. I am not liking this waiting thing.

I am so sorry you're having to go through this. Unfortunately, I know exactly what you're going through. My BO wasn't discovered till an ultrasound at 10 weeks and the empty sack measured at 7 weeks. I opted to MC naturally which took another 4 weeks to happen. Until that us I had never even heard of blighted ovums and soon discovered how terribly common it is. I learned later from my midwife that another girl came in right after me to discover the same thing.
I hope that if it is indeed a BO that your body will come to terms with it quickly and not continue to leave you hanging!
Also, know it is ok to mourn the loss of pregnancy and the hopes and dreams you had. This board is a wonderful place to sound off on.

Thanks for all the thoughts, prayers and support.

danielsgirl, 4 weeks? That must have been an awful four weeks. I don't know if I can wait that long. Hugs! I'm so sorry for your loss as well.

And yes, this board is a great place to let it all out without fear of what others will think of me. Thankyou ladies, and I'm so sorry that any of us have to be here.

I am starting to spot some this morning, and feel a little crampy, but I don't know if that is just nerves. I am hoping this is it!

I just came back to see if you'd found out any info. I'm so sorry that your news isn't looking positive. I'm one of the "lucky ones" I guess, in that I m/c soon after I found out and didn't have to wait or do a D & C. I was like you - I just kept thinking, "If it's not a viable pregnancy, then I just want it over and done with." Please keep us updated. I'm thinking of you!

Had my u/s today, with basically the same results. The sac is still measuring at 6wks, with no baby to be found. I came to terms with it last week, so it was all okay. I am going to wait for one more week and see if I can have a natural miscarriage, if not, I will schedule a d&c. I am ready to move on from here so we can try to get pregnant again. I really appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, and support from you wonderful ladies.

So sorry.:(

I was so mad when my 'missed' miscarriage was diagnosed. I had had no spotting, no loss of pregnancy symptoms. Heck, I was so hungry I was eating every 3 hours or so like a wild animal! Then to find out you've been walking around 5 weeks nourishing a dead baby. Whoa! Talk about feeling betrayed by your body! We never heard a HB..not at 9 weeks or 12...we thought it was because of my tilted uterus.....

In some ways I WISH I would have started bleeding. Lost pregnancy symptoms. SOMETHING. I felt so duped! That made it so much harder to accept. I guess I just always thought that women who miscarried lost symptoms and started bleeding. Weird how you know nothing about it till it happens to you!

Here's to TTC again!!

Janice, yea, being so nauseous, I thought everything was okay. I had no reason to think otherwise. And I hate that this experience will ruin it for any future pregnancy I may have. I will never think things are okay, hopefully once past the first trimester I will feel better, but still, I don't know.
