Questions after a m/c?

Here is my story. I am 24 years old and I was 8 weeks pregnant with my first child. I had my first prenatal appointment this week and everything was good. However, two nights ago I began bleeding and having lower pelvic/back pain, which sadly resulted in a miscarriage yesterday afternoon. The doctor performed an ultrasound and determined that I did not need a D&C. Since I came home from the hospital I have continued to have bleeding and some really bad cramping. How long should I expect this to last? My husband and I have talked about TTC again in the near future. When should I expect to start having my periods again? Any input or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I just really don't know what should be happening right now.

So sorry for your loss!! It's very common to lose your first pregnancy though with most women they don't even know they were pregnant it's so early. We lost our first at 6weeks and second at 3 months along. I remember getting my period back pretty soon after the bleeding was done (after a few weeks). You can expect it to last for a little while...prolly not too much longer than a normal period since you were 8 weeks. If you bleed REALLY heavy be sure to call the doc. I think most often you're told to wait a cycle inbetween just so your lining builds up...(I've heard there's more of a chance of miscarriage again if you don't wait, but that could be wrong) I hope you and your hubby have a happy heathy pregnancy next time. Keep a stiff upper lip and know we're all here for you whenever you need to talk!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss sweetie, but you've come to the right place for support.

:bighug:

Now, my losses were slightly different so my answers here are based on what i have learned from posting on this board over the months.

Your bleeding and cramps are fine unless the cramps get excruciating or the bleeding soaks through more than one pad per hour. Because you had a scan and that showed you did not need a D&C you should be fine.

You should expect to have your period again about 4-6 weeks after your loss. Sometimes you may ovulate and be able to concieve this cycle, but some women have annovulatory cycles right afterwards, but that's nothing to worry about either.

The main reason they tell you to wait a cycle before trying again is for dating purposes. They like to be able to date the pregnancy accurately, but they can do this with ultrasound scanning now anyway.

So sorry hun. :giveflower:

Hey sweetie, my second loss was at 7 weeks. I bleed heavily for about 10 days. It really depends on how long your body takes to get rid of everything. I kept in touch with my doc the whole time, he was a little concerned that I was bleeding that long but it eventually stopped. It took about 6 weeks to get my first cycle. My doc told me to wait 3 cycles. Some doctors say sooner. So you should really ask your ob what he/she thinks.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Take care of yourself and lots of luck in the future!!!

HUGS!!!!

I am so very sorry for your loss. Mine was different than yours so the only advice I can give is what I have read.

From what I have "heard" the most common advice it to wait as many weeks as you were pregnant before trying again. So, in your case, wait eight weeks and then start trying. Again, I have not been through this like you have so that is only what I have read or heard from others.

Please post here any time that you need to. I have found the strength of these women to be without equal. This is a safe haven for us all.

I wish you peace.

Shelly

I'm sorry for your loss. I had a m/c at 6 weeks. I also didn't have a d&c. I had bleeding for 6 days. My period started again in 28 days. But I have heard that it can take as long as 6 weeks. I was told by my doctor to wait 8 weeks.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It really helps me understand what I should expect to have happen. My cramping gets really bad at times, but does seem to be improving. I've noticed the amount of blood is becoming less. Yesterday I was feeling like it was a constant reminder of my loss when I went to the bathroom, strangely today I feel saddened because soon there will be nothing left. I'm hoping that my period will return within a few weeks and that I'll be able to start TTC again fairly soon with the approval of my Dr; however, this time around I am going to make sure that my TSH is within proper limits. I have an underactive thyroid and I've been reading up on its effects and I feel that this may of been a contributing factor. Has anyone else had this problem?
