    Default Eating for twins

I gotta say, I've been looking up how much you're supposed to eat when carrying mulitples (and drink, honestly) and HOLY COW! I know I'm not up to the weight I should be at this point, I just barely got back to my pre pregnancy weight now that I'm 17 weeks (lost 13 lbs first tri) and I'm just overwhelmed with feeling like I need to get going on gaining good weight for these kiddos and eating everything I should so they can thrive.

*sigh* I may make serving flash cards so it's easier to see what I should be eating, then move them from a "to eat" pile to the "eaten" pile when I accomplish it.

Though snacking all day has been good... just gotta keep up with the good snacks.

Yes, it is very daunting to read all of that. My MFM recommended 3500 calories per day and suggested protein shakes like Boost or Ensure. I like Boost better. He even told me to mix my Boost with ice cream. I drank about two Boosts a day to supplement my snacks and meals. I will be honest and say that I also ate Snickers bars, and I went to McDs and got Egg Mcmuffins on occasion. I also carried around two 2-liter containers of water. I often convinced fast food places to allow me to get a large water instead of those itty bitty things. Often, I just offered to pay for it and they gave it to me for free.

Don't focus too much on numbers. As long as your u/s shows that the babies are growing well, all is probably just fine. I think we get caught up in numbers too much.

Yeah, that first trimester was brutal. I went down 14 lbs. I was still losing weight at 20 weeks, but soon after, it really started packing on fast. I gained it all back plus another 9 lbs by 28 weeks. For me anyway there was a long window there during the second trimester when eating was NO problem ... I was scarfing down ridiculous amounts of food and waking in the night to eat more. I don't know about you, but I wasn't able to eat vegetables for more than three months but that big second trimester binge brought back all of my former food likes and I was back in the healthy game (plus loads of ice cream.)

I can attest the Ensure is kinda icky. Pretty good mixed with Rocky Road ice cream in a shake though - we used the ensure instead of milk. I think my appetite picked up pretty good and being in a city with fast food I ate more than my fair share. No fast food joints where I live, so it was quite the endulgence while on moderate bed rest. I think you'll be fine as long as they keep gaining weight.

It is definitely daunting. I tried protein drink mixes, and those did not taste awesome to me, had to mix with ovaltine powder first then add milk and mix quick, or it got clumpy and the clumps made me want to seriously gag. But I did eat a protein bar every day, and those tasted good at first and choking them down at the end. lol. I just snacked all day and still do. lol

I nursed my twins for 2years and 2 weeks! A little sad to be all done now.

I've been snacking like crazy and am FINALLY up 3 lbs from my pre pregnancy weight. Yay! 18 weeks tomorrow, so that's a bit later than I was hoping, but at least I'm getting somewhere.

I've had a lot of people suggest protein powder or drinks and the price tag made me gag, so I was going to keep track of what I was eating, see if I needed them. Dang, I need to track...

Glad to know it's not just me!

Yes, the price tag is a little intimidating. However, we just looked at our food budget and cut out some things to accommodate. It is important to remember that you won't be drinking them long term, so it is just a minor adjustment for the remainder of your pregnancy. Protein is very important for fetal development, and with two babies, those drinks helped me relax some and know that I was still providing my body and theirs with what we all needed. As I said earlier, don't stress yourself about it. Your body will take care of those babies. Your nutrition is for you. Those babies will leech every last vitamin and mineral from you. So, the nutrition piece is more to keep your vitamin and mineral stores replenished.

I still drink Boost to this day. I am a part-time group exercise instructor and sometimes I am not able to eat dinner before I go workout. So, I drink a Boost and have no fears that I will pass out at the gym.

I haven't had a single problem with my appetite--in fact, it's h ardly changed at all, unless you count the fact that I have to eat way less now that there's hardly any room for my stomach. My babies are growing fine, though-- I've only gained about 20 pounds, and I'll be 25 weeks this Wednesday. Is that bad?

Yes, those protein things can be pricey, but I really felt it was necessary, esp since we are not big meat eaters, only a couple times a week, and rarely red meat. And as Mel said, its just for a short while. I bought the protein drink thing at Sam's, and never did finish it (those 5wks in the hosp probably didn't help) and I did still drink some after the babes were born because I was nursing two and figured I still needed those calories, but I just could not stomach it any longer and dh gave it to a weight lifting friend, I was glad to see it go. lol

Not necessarily. That depends on your doctor's goal weight for you and how the babies seem to be growing. The big thing with weight gain and multiples is that you want those babies growing as much as possible as early as possible. If you were to happen to have the babies early, you want them at a great weight. Honestly though, it sounds like all is going well.
