    FAQ's

Here's a list of questions that are frequently asked on the mothers of twins/multiples board. Many of our MOM's have answered & hopefully will be of help to MOM's to be. Please feel free to answer these questions once your a MOM yourself & I'll keep adding to the answer lists. I've put the answers to each question in a seperate post so it's easier to find what you're looking for (we've even added links to jump you right to the answers!) with the first 5 questions grouped together in the next post.

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?

I had major food aversions. Everything smelled so bad I was afraid to try to eat it. By 15w or so my Dr prescribed some meds to help with the nausea.

I had 1 day with morning sickness.

not too bad, had to eat a lot of protein and then I felt fine!

    none!

Sorry ladies - no morning sickness here

it was actually minimal, just like they say, eat a little all day. If I allowed my stomach to be empty, the nausea was pretty bad. Brach's Lemon Drops were a surprising stomach settling treat.

No just felt nauseous when I had low blood sugar. I would eat and the feeling would go away

    No morning sickness at all!

I had NO m/s with the twins. Lucky me! I wish I was that lucky this time around

    Nope, morning sickness

Not with them, but I did with the other two. I don't believe there are any true tips.

horrible, ask doc for Zofran and eat soft pretzels.

no vomiting just felt a little nausea at times, kept crackers by the bed and snacked all day, never stood up too quickly

    Just a little nauseous

    yes. No tips.

Not bad at all. Just nausea, no vomiting. I took B6 everyday as soon as I found out I was pregnant. My MIL, who is a midwife, suggested it to help with MS.

Yes. It is 24/7 for the first 5 months.

    very little

YES! worse than with my singleton. Just know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Eat small snacks even if you don't think you can.

    None at all!

Oh, yeah...lots. No tips. Just eating helps you so you don't get nauseous.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why?

I was referred to a maternal-fetal specialist at 8w & saw him the remainder of my pregnancy, my normal OB always referred out HOM’s

I only saw a specialist during my level 2 ultrasounds.

    Nope

    Nope

    Nope

yes, at 36 wks to determine if the boys were developed enough for delivery due to my developing preeclampsia

I was referred to an OB by my regular GP. I had 'shared care' from 20 weeks on.

[color=orange=I saw a maternal-fetal specialist just because every woman having multiples at my OB's office did - just to be safe[/color]

No, just my regular OB and she is awesome.

Just the perinatologist, I think that's common.

just an u/s specialist for multiples

yes, a perinatologist because I was having twins and had a history of pre-eclampsia

MFM starting at 4 months and every month thereafter due to me going through fertility treatments to get pregnant

Yes, I saw a Reproductive Endocrinologist until 9 weeks pregnant, then went to a High Risk OBGYN. Beginning at 12 weeks, I was also seen by a Perinatologist. The RE was for fertility issues, the High Risk doctor was actually my OBGYN. I was referred to the Peri due to complications that began with bleeding, and escalated throughout the pregnancy.

no. no specialists in my rural town or nearby.

Yes. I saw a perinatalogist for my entire pregnancy starting at 10 weeks, once my RE confirmed triplets.

    No. Just my OB.

yes - to measure the babies’ growth and fluid levels once a month

I saw a specialist for two high-resolution ultrasounds. My regular O.B. ordered it simply because I was carrying twins, not because anything was wrong. He wanted to make sure their growth was on track and get a better look inside the babies to make sure they were O.K. and that my due date was accurate.

Around 36w due to apparent slow growth of one (dd). Turned out that everything was OK.

    Nope

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?:

I had bi-weekly appts from 8w on. I was supposed to start weekly appts at 30w but I was put on hospital bed rest at 29.5w

once a month until 20 weeks and then every 2 weeks, then every week starting at 30 weeks.

Same as singleton, and then additional ultrasound appointments

every four weeks, until I was 20 weeks then I went every two weeks until I was 36, then I was suppose to go in once a week

Once a month till around 16w, then every 3 weeks, then every to weeks at 28w

usual schedule, once a month until 7 months, then every two weeks after that, at 36 weeks, weekly visits would start, but I delivered

once a month, then once every 2 weeks at 28 weeks, and once a week after 34 weeks.

every 4 weeks until 20 weeks then every 2 weeks

Every 4 weeks, then every 2 weeks After I was on bed rest it was every week until they were born.

Just about every week after I was 6 months

I think we had another appt in 3 weeks and then went every 2 weeks.

normal monthly visits until around 6 months, then every two weeks and then at 30 weeks every week Also had stress test and ultra sounds done weekly after 32 weeks.

Monthly until week 28 then every 2 weeks

I saw my RE twice a week until 9 weeks, then my OBGYN once a week until 20 weeks when put in the hospital, then I saw an OB 3 times a day plus the Peri 1-2 times a week.

every 4 weeks until 10 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 34 weeks and that’s as far as I got, but it would have been every week from 34 weeks

I don't really remember. Maybe every 4 weeks at first, then 3 weeks, then my cervix started shortening so I had a sono two weeks in a row just before I was admitted for hospital bed rest. Then I saw a resident and an attending every day.

The same as during my singleton pregnancy until 30 weeks and then once a week

weekly after 27 weeks +monthly specialist visits

Once I hit 26 weeks it was every two weeks, then every week after 32 weeks.

Visit and u/s every 8w until 28w, then every other week. After 34w, I went just about once a week.

same as w/ one...monthly until 28 weeks, then every two weeks. Never made it to the weekly appts.

How often did you have ultrasounds?:

    I had a level II u/s 1x a month & “quick peek” ones in the Dr’s office 1x a month
    At every doctor’s visit
every 3 weeks starting with the first one at 21 weeks
    every 4 weeks
After the big one at 19w, every 6 weeks
every visit until 20 weeks, then two additional ones after that at 32 and 36 to check on growth
once a month after 20 weeks
every 4 weeks starting at week 20
Every 4weeks at first and then every other week closer to the end.
Every month, until I was 32 weeks, then I had them weekly.
Too hard to put any exact time frame because I found out late In those last few months I think I had about 5-6
    weekly after 32 weeks

at every MFM appointment (i.e. monthly) and lots in the very beginning
    1-2 times a week
every 2 weeks from 22 weeks- because of growth differences which turned out to be TTTS.
At every peri appt up until around 28 weeks.
Every week starting at 25 weeks.
    monthly at the specialist

Two in my regular O.B.'s office, and 2 at the specialist. Everything was fine with my babies so there didn't seem to be any reason for more.
Visit and u/s every 8w until 28w, then every other week. After 34w, I went just about once a week.
monthly after the one where we discovered there were two at 18 weeks.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?:

My Dr wanted me to gain 75lbs, I only managed to gain 24lbs

I don't remember how much I was suppose to gain but I only gained like 30-35 lbs.

told to gain up to 50, I gained 35

    I gained 40

I wasn't told what to gain - I gained 16lbs but I started out overweight too

no specific guidelines were given to me. I followed the advice of Dr. Barbara Luke's "What to Expect When You're Expecting Multiples" book for a woman of my height and BMI...my goal was to gain around 40 lbs. and I ended up gaining 49 total. A week after I delivered, I was down 30 lbs., mostly due to excessive fluid retention those last weeks

    45 lbs.

I was never given an amount to gain but I gained 55 pounds

I gained 35 pounds with the twins.

I was told to gain 50 lbs, and I did! I weighed 98lbs when I got pregnant so I needed to gain some weight!

    like 12-15 lbs

My doc wanted 40 pounds at least but I was small and only gained 33. I ate well but I was all baby

45 lbs and I gained exactly 45 lbs. I was aiming to gain between 45 and 50 lbs based on what Dr. Luke's book states but the boys were born 2 weeks early.

Never given a figure to gain. I gained 19 1/2 pounds.

not told any specific weight to gain - or not to go over. Gained 57lbs

    50lbs. 50lbs.

    60 pounds. I gained 62 pounds.

no one mentioned a number - I gained 54 pds

I was told 35-45 lbs. I gained 50, which was actually 15-20 less than with my singleton! Go figure! (no pun intended).

Dr didn't really specify. Told me just to eat a variety of foods. I gained 45 lbs on an already plus-size frame

They didn't tell me. I gained like 60 lbs., though.

When did you find out the babies sexes?

    We found out 1 at 16w & the other 2 at 20w
    at 14 weeks
    21 weeks
    17 weeks
    When they were born
    20 wk Level II u/s
    at birth
    at 20 weeks
    at 20 weeks
    at 20 weeks.
    at that 1st u/s
    20 weeks

When they were born...it was a surprise!!
    17 weeks.
    At 19 weeks
At my 20 week Level II sono
At my 20 week ultrasound, I was 100% sure that Bri was a girl. Ari was curled up in a little ball and stayed that way for the entire pregnancy. We didn't know for sure that she was a girl until she was delivered.
18 or 19 weeks at the specialist office

We found out about our boy at my regular O.B. during the 2nd. ultrasound (26 weeks?), then about the girl at our 1st high resolution ultrasound (28 weeks).
16w u/s ds was confirmed, but not til 20w u/s for dd.
At 18 weeks when we found out there were two.

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why:

I was put on home bed rest at 24w due to a shortening cervix & put on hospital bed rest at 29w for PIH & no measurable cervix.

    No

    nope

nope, was told just to take it easy

Yes, a day before they were born due to preterm labor and the threat of a prolapsed cord

    nope

I went on bed rest at 36 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. It only lasted 2 days

I was on modified bed rest from week 28 on for contractions

I was on bed rest for nearly 3 months. I kept going into pre-term labor. Luckily they were always able to stop it.

Yes, at 27 weeks, due to a shortening cervix and lots of contractions.

Not true bed rest, just told to take it easy.

moderate at around 34 weeks. was told to put feet up 2 hours a day. hard when you have other kids.

not officially, I did spend a few days in bed because I wanted to be conservative

Yes, 1 week of bed rest at 6 weeks due to emergency surgery to untwist my ovary from around my fallopian tube. Another week of bed rest at 7 weeks due to bleeding. Permanent bed rest at 12 weeks due to bleeding (found subchorionic hematoma at 17 weeks). Hospital bed rest from 20 weeks until delivery due to preterm labor. Fully dilated and positive Ffn at 24 weeks.

    no

I went on bed rest at home at 20 weeks because it was the policy of my peri for all triplet moms. I was admitted to hospital bed rest at 28 weeks due to shortening cervix and contractions.

Around 25 weeks. I had placenta previa. I went on bed rest to stop labor.

only for a day when my uterus was irritable! I rested a lot w/o being told to though.

Yes, only because my doc prescribes it as a safety measure. He likes his multiples patients to be on modified bedrest starting at 26 weeks to help with the babies growth, even if things seem fine. Modified bedrest meaning 2 hours laying down, 1 hour up. It worked for me. I delivered two 6 pounders at 36 weeks!

    No

    yes...27 weeks...preterm labor.
