UPDATE: Bit worried, twin B weight gain (babies are here!)

Update: see post #39, twins are born in great health despite her being smaller than her brother.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm 2 weeks out from my c-section but there's an issue. I went to MFM for a weight scan, fluid's fine, babies look good. He's 6 lbs. 12 oz while she is 5 lbs. 5 oz, she dropped down to 38% percentile for growth, which means another trip to MFM Thursday & again on Monday to check her abdomen/growth. Worse case scenario - early c-section. My iron is very low & I'm measuring 47 weeks (belly wise), otherwise their weights are okay & such.

Anyone ever experience this? Doctor mention something about an abdominal belly band, not that there's a real band around her stomach. I just can't help thinking that I'm nearly there and now something else to be worried about.

p.s. Yes my hospital bag is packed
p.s.s. and yes, OMG, I'm carrying over 12lbs of baby being petite/tiny, that part we're laughing about

Hi! Twin prevnancies suck. So much more worrying than with a singleton. Cant tell you anything about this- because I just dont know.

My sister had tiny babies and the docs always worried and her kids were always completely normal. Seems like they are both good size and if they see any signs of stress they can end this pregnancy then.

Sarafina and Keira were always somewhat discrepant. Keira was baby A, and she was always bigger. Sarafina is very petite. She takes after me and my MIL. There is a genetic history of kids in my husband's family not being on the growth chart. I think the weights sound fabulous. Sarafina was estimated to only weigh a tad over 3 pounds right before we decided to deliver at 37 weeks. However, she ended up weighing 4 pounds, 5 ounces. K actually weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces...and was estimated at just over 4 pounds. The use of femur and abdomen measurements for weight is not totally reliable because if a baby is petite, it will estimate a lower weight. I am petite, like you, and so are my girls. Our biggest issue with Sarafina was that because we delivered at 37 weeks (because it looked like she had stopped growing...just like your baby B...drops in percentiles), she ended up needing NICU time and she continues to struggle with the suck and swallow reflex. Sometimes, I regret letting my MFM talk me into delivering early. I will always wonder if I had let her bake until 39 weeks if her outcome would have been different. She continues to be petite and is not on the growth chart. So, if this was her genetic destiny, did we really need to deliver the girls at 37 weeks? Know what I mean? I hate decisions like that because the what ifs never seem to go away. Oh, and although Sarafina still has some slight feeding issues, and was slightly slower on milestones (crawling at 10 months and walking at 16 months), she is doing just fine. Smart as can be too.

The questions I would be asking are how much weight they expect a baby to gain per week, what is the standard error of measurment related to the weights (basically what is the range that the weights can be expected to fall within), how often are weights higher than predicted when the babies are born, and how reliable are femur and abdomen measurements for babies that are of petite stature? These are questions that I did not really know to ask.

I hear ya, we've had a lot of "what if's" even with our boys who each had different issues/problems during pregnancy. I plan on asking lots of questions on Thursday, hoping to get a clearer picture of what's going on. I read last night that weight discordance can be common with twins, she is also breech and squashed up high which could account for measurements being off. So we'll see... for now I'll monitor movements and be ready for that appt. on Thursday. I'm also trying to up my nutrition some & get plenty of bedrest (which last night I read can help).

I don't have any advice but I feel for you. The worry is literally doubled with twins and it doesn't go away after they are born. My guys didn't have a huge weight difference (about 1lb) but he seemed to grow much better then her. Kaylee is still very petite (17lbs at a year, which isn't crazy small but still on in the 20 percentile). Hopefully your next appt has a better outcome. But either way, you will be able to hold your babes soon. Keep up the good work Smile

The way my dr sorta explained it was with twins they spend the whole pregnancy (and there whole lives basically being compared )and that really did make me feel a little more at ease...... If it was a singleton you wouldn't think twice about if baby was 5lbs or 6lbs at this point. Back in June I had some "questionable" lower fluid and they came to realize A was a little bigger therefore more fluid and when I went back a few weeks later they were within a few ounces. Than when I went to specialist in August Baby a was 5lbs and B was only 4lbs 8oz and they diden't seem concerned. Its hard not to be concerned but I am sure everything is fine!!!! I go Thursday for my last sono to check weight and such, hopefully all is well and I can make it to my c-sec date Tuesday.

My tech always explained it was much harder for him to get the measurements as accurately as he wanted to at the end because the boys were squashed together. It's hard not to worry, but as long as they are being monitored, I'm sure they will be fine! They are already both great weights!!

Hugs....I wouldn't overly stress. Mine would sometimes be way off at the end and they would remeasure a few days later and they were fine. Relax and rest, you will need your energy in 2weeks

Good appt today, passed my NST with flying colors (scored a 10), they said she looks fine. Another NST Monday & Thursday, then my c-section on the 24th. They said if they score an 8 or less then out they come but for now they are happy with the results. Whew!! Each time I go for up there, I'll take my hospital bag just in case. It's funny because even now at 36 weeks, these two keep switching spots! They have no room but still manage to change positions.

Glad that it went well. Now a little break before your appt. I bet I would find it impossible to relax at that point in the pregnancy. Do you have any help planned for when they come home? Won't be too long. Smile

I have help, my Mother in Law is here, she's staying till after birth for awhile too. Huge relief since my other boys need taking to school and such. I'll need time heal from c-section & then start pushing a double stroller back & forth for school but that's good because it'll help me get back in shape. Smile

Glad you have help, I don't know how I would have done it without help these first weeks with apps etc...the breast feeding schedule has been brutal

Danielle, I can only imagine how crazy it is. I plan on pumping if I can, I kept my old electric breast pump that still works, so yay! Smile I'm counting down the days...

Sleep, depends, haha. OMG today was stressful. I saw my Obgyn at 1, she was a bit worried about Baby B (girl), then I go to MFM and they did the NST again, then a scan. During the scan, they got all freaked out because she was not practicing breathing. Which meant a direct pass to L&D! 2+ hours there, they said everything's fine, sent me home. I go back Thursday for another NST & scan. I think the tech, when scanning, moved off of her & missed the breathing episode or something. The doctor was able to see her breath but they wanted the extra monitoring just in case, otherwise instant c-section.

Afterwards, I was starving, so we stopped off at a diner and wow...the looks, laughs, etc, I got. Kinda mean but then again I am huge and now we're laughing about how I must be "walking birth control" for anyone on a date, haha.

Sorry about the scariness of your appointments. Glad that things are ok, but really, seems like it would be ok to be done with this pregnancy already, right? (not under those circumstances though)

As for the looks and laughs, I don't really think it is funny. You probably handled it 10 times better than I would.

I don't know how you get any sleep. I am already noticing difficulty with that and I am only 21 weeks along. I think mine is mostly anxiety and only a little bit from discomfort. And, yes, I know that will change. But this whole "not really quite viable yet" stage is freaking me out. I know you have all been there.

Tiffany, TBH, the diner incident did bother me some but I try to take everything "with a grain of salt". Danielle, thanks for the post, at 4' 10" I am literally all out in front. Let them stare & giggle, we're the ones that deserve awards or something. Smile :) Smile

On Thursday I hit 37 weeks, will post a belly pic, and will see how the NST test goes. It's all about their lungs right now, so that's why they've been hesitant to take them out (every doctor's different though, some prefer earlier delivery, others later).

The anxiety, normal, I get it too. Have you've thought about a recliner to sleep in? We lack the room here so I got this:
Bed Lounger @ Sharper Image

I am cradled in it along with using a belly wedge pillow. I half sleep sitting up but some nights I don't fall asleep till 2AM and then wake up at 5AM with the leg pains & reflux which I so happen right now as I type! Me & food don't get along so well.

Jenn, when my SIL was pregnant with the triplets she had a lot of looks. She is also petite (and a size 1) and her "waist" went to 52" with the boys (born at 34 weeks). When she was 16 weeks she went to buy some larger maternity overalls and the lady asked why when she was ready to pop. My SIL broke into tears and told them how far along she was, then said they were triplets. The whole store went quiet.

Saw your post about pumping as well...she breastfed 2 at a time and the third would get a bottle (of either pumped milk or formula) by the nanny or a family member, she rotated every feeding. Not sure how she did it (I did not meet the boys until they were 3) but the boys are 14.5 yrs old now.

I am sitting in my recliner right now typing on a laptop. I really wanted a recliner with my last pregnancy, a singleton, but we lacked the room and the money for one. I will definitely check out that Bed Lounger. I at least bought a size up at Destination Maternity and I am so glad I did. Maybe the stuff will last a month instead of a week that way. We will see.

I got the greenlight to keep working. I get contractions whenever I walk. I am only 21 weeks. WTF. But my cervix didn't shorten this last month. I just make sure and stop and rest a lot, and try putting my feet up after work and letting DH do literally everything. Already. I push the water, but most of my walking activity occurs in the mornings before I have had a good chance to get lots of water in. Oh well, at least they stop as soon as I do (for now).

DH has been reading Dr. Luke's book which is a good thing. I think he realized what I have been trying to tell him - that I have not been getting enough protein or enough rest. Got his attention.

There is a Mothers of Multiples sale this weekend. I still don't feel like buying anything. Maybe after I get past 28 weeks. DH is at home, so he can take care of all that in good time.

As for breastfeeding, I amazed by ladies that do it with one baby. I was unsuccessful with #1 for a variety of reasons. This time I will be the sole breadwinner and back to work quickly. Last time I got almost psychotic post-partum depression which went away completely when I started sharing feedings with DH. This time he has actually offered to get all the nighttime feedings, and we are hiring someone full time during the day so he can sleep and get a break. I feel really bad that they will probably not be breastfed much, but I know that it is more than I can handle. And the guilt last time did not help one bit. 3 lactation consultants later and it took my ob-gyn to tell me to stop, to take care of myself and just not to kill my baby. That may sound extreme, but I apparently do not handle sleep deprivation all that well. I know that may make some of you BTDT multiple moms laugh hysterically, but at least I am lucky enough this time to get whatever help I need... plus my MIL offered to take the the babies overnight at her house once per week just so that we can get a reprieve. Hope she keeps that promise. I will go into debt if needed just to get the help we need to survive.

Definitely try to take it easy whenever you can, I was told BH's are common in twins, sometimes I get a doozy of one that takes my breath away. Clothes, I've gone up 2-3 sizes, each time I thought I was set for awhile, I wasn't (good thing for Old Navy sales & such). Breastfeeding, I'm going to give it my best but have formula on hand. With my first son, I had to supplement formula because he had very bad acid reflux and lost too much weight right away, it was scary. With my second son, I had bowel obstruction after my c-section which really threw a kink into everything. Maybe I'll have better luck this time around, third time's the charm they say.

Hopefully everything is fine with the weight... I will be honest, when I was in labor the doctor did an ulrasound to see what we were looking at for weight and they were WAY off!! They said that my DD was almost a whole pound smaller which was not how it looked last ultrasound and when they were born, they were only 4 ounces different. Good Luck!! Its exciting anticipating, not one but TWO! Smile

Passed my final NST, ultrasound looks great, onto my schedule c-section on Monday. Smile What a relief!

Here's my belly pic today, 37 weeks exactly. (I don't bother with makeup, showers are difficult for some reason...probably all this weight, my belly's low too).

Wow! You are all baby. I bet you are going to feel great to get them delivered!! And congrats on making it this far.

I won't worry about the BH contractions when we get to a very viable point, they just make me nervous now while I am just at 21 weeks.

And I had BH contractions that early - they were never measurable or more than 5-6 an hour, so I didn't worry (too much!) LOL

You made it full term Congrats x1000. And you look great Smile but I thought the 18th was the big day? Can't wait to hear the babes are here safe and sound. KUP and when they arrive come join us over at the parents side (it's picking up now!). Good luck with the big day. So close. Take it easy, go get a Mani/pedi and try (as hard as it might be) to enjoy your last few days before you have two screaming babes to look after!

Hope all is well today with you all. My sister brought her kids up for the week. One is 4 and he is handful compared to my kid. And the other is almost 3, also a handful compared to my kid. If I am up doing too much I get contractions, so besides work, I am trying to take it easy. I was hoping the kids would play well together, but their oldest keeps stealing stuff away from the other kids and his tantrums involve crying and wall kicking. I guess it is good preparation for the many fun times to come as we go from 1 rather well behaved child to a 3-child circus.

Anyway, thinking of you today and really hoping you can just go into labor and be done with this already. I am not sure that there is anyway I could enjoy being that pregnant. Though, at least with one older child, I do know that it is all worth it in the end.

Labor on my own, no way, even my doctor said I have a cervix of steel and that's after having LEEP surgery about 2-3 years ago. Smile I did my pre-op bloodwork today, all done, now for a nap because last night I slept 2 hours only. Monday, we're all set, I'll get DH to post about their births. I'm almost there....whew!

We're home, yay, here's a proper update:

Twins born on 9/24/12 @ 6PM:
Finnley Ryan - 6lbs 14 oz (19.5" long), Faelynn Rose - 5lbs 3 oz (18.5" long), both are doing well, the Pediatrician this morning said everything's perfect. My c-section recovery is going slow, my feet & ankles are swollen, belly very gassy, but all-in-all glad to be home. Also looking forward to more sleep than the hospital, I swear they woke me up more than newborns, haha.

I'm in a lot of pain still, my MIL is here staying with us. When Fae came out, she had low blood sugar but she's ok.

Yahoo so happy to hear they are doing great. They are adorable and great sizes. You did amazing. As for bfing, don't beat yourself up if you have to give them formula. You are trying to recover from a major surgery. Its hard. The only thing I can suggest that helped me in the beginning was that I didnt tandem. I found it too hard to hold both on. Congrats again. I love the names too!
