Last summer, our church took a mission trip to Honduras. Randall was able to go. This year, Randall and I have decided (well and God was in on it too! ), that I will be going! I am sooooo very excited to be doing the Lord's work in a different country! Still not sure how we will pay for it, but hey, He'll provide right?!
Well, I thought about doing a fundraiser. I have mentioned it before, but I thought you ladies could probably give me some great advice on what to do! I think our church could probably hold 30 or so easily. I was thinking maybe about $10 a piece, snacks included. I am sure it will be mostly old people from our church, maybe some younger people. If 30 don't come from the church, I think I will open it up to the public.
The thing is, I don't know what would be better- do a class and have them make a couple of cards, or make it just a scrap night. Personally, I would rather make it a scrap night, but I don't think many people scrap around here, unfortunately. So, I will be supplying glue, scissors, paper, and snacks. Do you think $10 a person is good, or should I up it, or should I just ask for donations only?
Do you have any great ideas? Fun things to do? I read somewhere to have everyone make their own name tag, and vote and that person wins something. Any ideas like that? What do you think? Throw anything and everything my way b/c I need some ideas!
hmm...I am so bad with ideas for event nights...adults are so much harder than kids! lol....what about a craft night instead of scrap night? That way people who knit or whatever could also join the scrappers? I don't know if that's even feasible...just talking out loud. lol
I do want to say though that I think it's great you are going to be getting to go on this Mission trip!
Let me think about this for a minute and I'll try to give you some more ideas.
I really think I'm leaning towards card making for several reasons: quicker, maybe cheaper?, and everybody uses cards. It would be easy to do some theme papers and stamps that are holidays and what not. You maybe could find some people that have some supplies like stamps that can be used over and over. So kinda a make and take session where you have cardstock prefolded and ready to go and maybe a few examples.
I really think if you are doing snacks and providing materials maybe $15 is not too much to ask. Chances are if they know you are doing it for a good cause, they won't mind it. Or (and no offense) if this is an older crowd, maybe have everyone bring a sweet or salty snack with them and do $10.
And Sadie I truly believe in missions and hope that you will raise the money that you need to go. I'll be praying that God will provide for you. If you do this, I would love to be a "silent" scrapper and pay whatever fee you charge and then maybe you can use my portion to pay for supplies. Or since I didn't sign up for the scrapbook train, I can gather some things up and send supply wise.
One more thought if the other girls are willing. We do card swaps(hey, we haven't done one lately have we?) What about if some of us that are willing made you 3-5 cards and you tried to auction them off? Even a couple of dollars a piece would help you greatly b/c you wouldn't need to buy supplies. I have tons of cards that are just sitting around until I found someone to give them too. Just an idea.
Second, I'd love to make 3-6 cards for you, if you had an outlet to sell them? Would your church allow you to do a fund-raiser inside? I may even be able to do more, it just depends on when.
A card scrap night would be the best thing. Like you said...not everyone scrapbooks, but everyone can make and use a card(s). Come up with a basic design and have everyone follow you like a card class. You could have two designs picked out and let them choose or do both designs. $10 sounds fair to me...even $15 would be fair, as people know the money raised goes to missions. It's not like you are keeping the money for yourself. Does your church do bulletins? you could have them put it in the next two bulletins and create a sign-up list. Then you can ask friends around town that don't go to your church too. I bet you could easily get 20+ girls!! How fun!

oh and maybe you could have a donations box set up too, in addition to the class fee. most ppl are willing to give (even a dollar) if it goes to a good cause.
As for snacks, keep them simple and inexpensive. You can make a big bowl of dip and chips or something. I wouldn't let the food expenses get too high. People aren't coming for food...they are coming for a card class, so you don't have high expectations to meet if you know what I mean? Man, I wish we lived closer...I'd so love to help with this.

I think I would lean toward cards also, and since you are providing the materials I would up it to at least 15, maybe 20, and maybe some silent auction items? like that airplane frame that Charys (I think) made, just crafty stuff like that.

Ditto the cards ... I've been to a "stamp camp" where we made cards, about 5 copies of 4 different designs (20 cards in all) and that was a lot of fun. I think that would be a great thing to do for a fundraiser.
And I'm with some of the others, I'll happily be a "silent scrapper" to contribute to your fundraising. Honduras, how exciting!

I am in tears b/c of you sweet, wonderful ladies. You are amazing! I just want to say thank you for the kind words. I hear a lot of bad things from family b/c they don't want me to go, so it was nice, very nice, to have some support. Words can't explain ladies. You are amazing. Thank you.
As for the ideas- I LOVE the silent auction idea! I need to get some signs together to make! I can't wait to do that. I've looked online and found some neat ones, that can also involve photography and scrapbooking! Thanks so much!
The cards- I really, truly appreciate you ladies offering to send me some cards. The thing is, we tried to sell some for the Valentine's banquet for cheap, and none of them sold. BUT, I might get some together and put make an altered box to put a mixture of handmade cards in for the silent auction. If I do that, the cards would be a fantastic idea! See, I truly needed you ladies! Your ideas are amazing!
Silent Scrappers- First off, again, you are all amazing. Just the thought warmed my heart so much. I would NEVER ask anything of you ladies. I KNOW times are tough right now. So, please do not feel like I am asking you to donate. I know God will provide. I love you all very much!
Sadie, I really hope you get support for whatever you do. I'm sorry your previous attempt to sell cards didn't go over. Maybe it would be better in this venue though because they will be there to help you out anyway.
Sadie, I just wanted to wish you luck!
My aunt and uncle were missionaries in Honduras for many years...the need is great in many areas and they loved it there.
