Before and After (Or the Making of a Card Making Area)

Before- Laundry Room
(I can't believe I'm showing this picture. This is BAD)

Before- Scrapbooking storage (plus kitchen counter, and a bucket under the island, and other random places)

Over the last day and a half, much folding, sorting through 3 dressers, putting away too small of clothing in closet, putting away clean clothes, sorting, and throwing away.

After-

Now, I didn't start cleaning the laundry room with this purpose, but it's a darn nifty bonus. I'm nowhere near done sorting through my scrapbooking stuff.... man did that get disorganized and messy.... so that's why the desk is messy. I've also yet to use the space so I'm sure what seems like the "perfect" arrangement of stuff may change as I actually use it.

I don't know why we didn't think of it before. I have been fighting HARD my husband's suggestion that I set up a space in the basement. It just would not have been practical for me. This is PERFECT. I can hear the kids and I'm as close as when in the computer room. I am near the kitchen for those "well you need to be near the oven but not staring at it moments". I won't be disturbing Katie during afternoon naps in her bedroom or bedtime in the living room. Built in table and an empty cabinet at my disposal. The ability to clean out the cabinet next to it if needed. Plug ins right there, and light directed right at that table (along with a SUNNY window). AMPLE work area, even with the milk carton storage, and I still can fit 2 baskets of laundry on the counter.

Okay... I think my excitement is obvious. Smile

:yahoo:That's so cool what you did with that space!!!!! I'm super jealous of all the storage and shelves. Wink A lot of work, but so worth it huh? You've inspired me to maybe move my craft table into the laundry room too!! It would be out of Kayson's room....i.e. curious hands!

In his room? Wow. You're BRAVE. My stuff would be in shreds if I did that with my kids. Then again I have 3 in one room.

This house is HUGE, but it's made for entertaining really. Today, after my husband has been here 9.5 years and I 6.5, we just realized that we bet that counter was made lower, not to sit it under the window, but to make a housewife's desk area. That way the room we use as a computer room was truly the man's office.

I swear it was meant to be. I feel really like I have my OWN space in this house finally and not just in a "you cook and clean here". It's a place for ME and MY stuff. Smile It's a good feeling.

What a great space! I have a space set aside it just seriously needs to be organized. I can't even use my table to scrap because it is buried under everything else. I have to use the back of a scrapbook, or my paper cutter, in my lap as my table:Whistle:

That is such a wonderful use of space! How exciting that you have a place to call your own (although if you ask my DH he'll say the laundry area already is all mine Smile )

I don't mind washing. It's the folding. Well, hanging too. I still have to hang the hanging clothing and put them away. They're laying flat on a board right now.

Someone is going to come over and watch the girls on Friday and I'm going to finish sorting, etc. We're going to make a ghetto shelf (2 coffee cans and a board) so I can lay out some stamps and things without taking away from my work area.

I am finding SO much stuff. You should see the completely finished cards I've found. I have a good start on the card ministry just some sorting through my stuff. Gotta problem solve what to do with my paper, and we've decided that I really need the extra shelves so we need to find more boxes and things so it's easy access to the items in the cabinet.

I'm not going to lie though... I'm exhausted from all of this. That's a lot of work and we're rehabilitating the whole room, and making the broom closet actually the broom closet again. LOL

Great!! I know how awesome it feels to have a space of your own to scrapbook and spread out a little bit without having to pack and un pack things to do it. Enjoy your new area. Smile

ROFL I am completely dying in laughter over here. My DH just came in the room to see what was so funny! I demand a picture of the "ghetto shelf" when you get it done!!! lol

That is a perfect area for card making! I had a slight panic attack when I saw your clothes pile (you know I'm OCD, right?) but you really do have a perfect little nook now! Great job!!

You shall most certainly see the ghetto shelf. It's up actually. The board is about 3 inches wider then I'd prefer (my paper cutter now has to go underneath it when I'm cutting) but I can trim it later. I need to get a paper tray. I want to put big scraps there. I'm limiting myself to one SMALL box for small scraps. I threw away a lot yesterday.

I'm thinking of pulling out a cart I used in college and unpacking my travel bag into it. My only fear is that the kids will go through it. Hm... I think I might try it today.

God must like that I have a space because he gave me a snow day. It's snowing sideways here. I can't even get out to get groceries... which will be interesting if this blizzard lasts through Tuesday because we have MAYBE 12 diapers total for Katie.

I'll go take a picture of the ghetto shelf. I'm currently sorting through all the cards people have given me. Some I can cut things out of and use on cards.... others are TACKY. It'll be good to cut through the mess.

Be glad you have a space to call your own. My "space" is the kitchen table, the cupboard under the entertainment center, the cupboard in our bedroom and my bedroom closet corner (where I keep my cropper hopper). We honestly don't have the space for anything.

You are ready to go now!! Looks great! I'm thinking I need a ghetto shelf now. It would be cute to cover the cans in cardstock... just gave me an idea!

My space has been used now.... and not by me!

My husband went through my stuff and made me an anniversary card tonight while I was busy with one of the kids. It's really cute. I'll get a picture of it tomorrow.

Finished sorting through a backlog of cards people had given me. That took all day. Added some decorating touches to the room. Places I've travelled (from my postcard collection) and college room pictures mostly. It makes me smile to go in the laundry room now. Smile

Well I'm not done, but here's what I did yesterday Charys....

(Added the picture over the permanent weather/temp thingie)

(Jesus will be coming down and going into hubby's office so I can put up a lighthouse print. Feels sacreligious even though my house is practically a shrine already.) I have 4 more photos that hubby wants me to frame before putting up. I'll also being putting up one of my maps over the washer/dryer. It's a blank wall right now except for the sign that says "Hubby- NO BRAS IN THE DRYER"

Added the cart. Still have to empty my travel bag.

Added touches to the desk itself. All are either postcards I've collected or found sorting through all those cards. (All the postcards on the wall are places I've been)

And finally, the card from hubby.

(He alsways does something map or globe for me as I'm a cartography major)

(We found all these neat stamps, from like India and other faraway places. They're from the 60s. Cool, but what to do with them? So he put them on the back of the card.)

ok, that card is the sweetest thing! I love that he included all the stamps. I didn't know you majored in cartography! How cool!!!! Ok, this leads me to think we need some "about Me" layouts done. We always do layouts focused on our kids, husbands and family, but never about ourselves.

You desk area is so personal! Love it! I measured the space in my laundry room but it's way too small for my desk. Sad In my son's room it shall stay. For now atleast.

Yup- Physical Geography is my primary focus, but Cartography/Global Information Science was my backup. Of course I've never done anything with it so I am probably so out of date in the field that I never could, but I had fun while I studied it.

We've been blessed with an abundance of countertop space here. You should see my kitchen. It's a blessing and a curse.

My hubby is rather crafty. I should take pictures of the model town he's made- mostly out of old computer mice, cardboard boxes and the bits from his diabetic supplies.

I think we should start a question thread about us. Smile
