Default Catching up, sharing too (very pic heavy)

I'm really hoping that my life slows down so I can actually scrapbook! But the month is almost over and it's not looking good for January layouts. *sigh*

So first, I wanted to share the news that I actually won something! Some of you saw this on Facebook, but for those who didn't, I won Project Life from Becky Higgins. I picked the digital version, and I plan to use it to make a book about 2010 with my Project 365 photos. I just need to find the time to sit and do it. I really hope to get it done by the end of February, as I don't want much more time to pass.

Next, I found out a couple days ago that one of my photographs was published in a calendar. Some of you might have seen that on Facebook too. I shared that on my blog if you want to see it - http://flashbulbspurpleirises.wordpr.../26/published/

The photography business is really slow. But you know, I don't think that I could deal with much business right now with the fact that I feel behind in EVERYTHING. That being said, I do want to do something to my "studio" area. I need a room divider to hide my "stuff" like the backdrops and props not being used. I've been looking for a good one for many months now. Then I saw this in Home Goods a couple of weeks ago. (gotta love camera phones!)

It was $300, and I didn't care for the fabrics. But I thought it would be neat to make my own. How hard can it be? I had some scrap plywood, and I bought a fabric remnant at Jo-Anns, as well as upholstery tacks. My mom gave me some batting, and I put it all together for a very small version of what the room divider would be like. I just wanted to know how easy it was. It only took me about 10 minutes. I didn't iron the fabric first, and I regret that as the folds really show. But this was just for practice, so I'm not sweating it.

Cool, huh? So I need to find a few spare hours to buy the supplies and make this. DH doesn't know yet, I'm sure he'll roll his eyes. He'll be gone for a month, so maybe I'll do it when he's gone (if I can get 6' plywood home in my car).

I've also done a very little bit of sewing. My sister asked me to make her a bag to hold plastic bags. I had never done it, but it didn't seem too hard. Found instructions online, and made her this on Christmas Day.

My mom liked it and wanted one too. Bought more fabric and made one for Mom and one for me about 2 weeks ago. Forgot to photograph Mom's (used different fabric for hers), but here's mine:

And then January is a big birthday month here, so I had to make some cards (also sewed a gift bag for DH, but forgot to photograph it)

I saw a blog where a woman cut a soda can and embossed it for cards. I thought it was cool so I did it too. But it's VERY sharp and I cut my hands in several places while doing this. I've gotten better with it, and have been filing the edges.

Natalie turned 5 last week, and she's very into Little Mermaid. Her card is simple

    She sure loved it!

Then DH's birthday was also last week ... his card is also simple, and I managed to screw it up. I was in a rush and I put the sticker and paper strip on the wrong side.

    Rich's card

So I improvised and rotated it. Not perfect, but it worked

Then my good friends Maria and Amy have birthdays at the end of the month. I made cards for them too, and I'm really happy with how they came out. I used the same quote on the insides, I thought it was neat:

"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice."
    - Cherokee Expression

They loved their cards too. I wish I had made more of them to give to other friends, but I was running low on time. I'll have to remember these so that I can do it again in the near future.

Okay, I think that's about it. I know I wrote a novel and shared a lot of photos. But it's been a while, and I wanted to catch up on the crafty stuff that I've been doing over the last 33 days.

Wow've been really busy! All these things are so neat! Love the can idea. I tried cutting up cans once for something else I was's a bit hard to do and a bit sharp too. But yours came out great! Ok I saw your fabric board on flickr and wasn't sure what it was. But that's so neat! You are so creative Gwen! I wish I could sew and put things together like that. I want to take up sewing. I think it would be neat to finally be able to make things for my kids. Like a quilt. lol

You are so creative. I love that you can see an idea and roll with it. That photography "screen" will be awesome when you are done...loove that green fabric!! You used the embosser on the coke cans?!?! I must know how you did that!! Sooo cool! I wonder if my hubby's metal snips would work well for cutting that? hahaha, I could just snatch them from his toolbox and he'd never know. Because those cards rock. I'm itching to give this a try!! I love that you got a pic of Natalie receiving her card. Andrew and Jordan look just as excited. Sweet! So good to see an update from you!
