Biggrin You've asked me the most common question I get. It's sweet of you to want to get it right.

It's spelled all WRONG.

It's pronounced like the chair you sit on and iss (rhymes with miss)

or like Cherish without the "sh" sound at the end...instead put a "s" at the end.

YAY for getting close to buying a Cricut!!!!!! I hope you get one! I know you won't be disappointed!

Wow, I was just thinking about this earlier too. My mom's name is always mispronounced so I grew up with the sensitivity to getting names correct.

I'm curious as to how your parents came up with your name. I've never seen your name before.

(She's Darice, pronouced like Paris only with a D, or Dare-us. It's also my Katie's middle name and she's called Katie Darice a LOT.)

Thanks Charys, I went back and forth between that and Care-is...we have a friend Karis that is pronounced Care-is. Good to know!

I know, its so exciting about the cricut! I keep asking Dh when I get it Wink Im trying really hard to be patient, but its so difficult. We decided that if Im going to keep making cards for extra money it would pay for itself, and since Ive been working really hard on valentines and made about half of the money, I deserve it. DH is usually the one to get all the big ticket items in the family so its nice to get something for myself. I struggled with mentioning the idea of getting it to DH or even mentioning getting it to anyone else, because we have all kinds of financial issues and Im always the one telling DH no when he wants to get something (usually something we dont need). And I absolutely hate it when I hear of someone struggling with money and then they go out and buy something expensive. But hopefully the cricut can help me make MORE money! And it will pay for itself and then some.

What a good question b/c I've been pronouncing it wrong (in my head) forEVER! I've been saying it like char-is.....like charred bbq. LMAO! So sorry Charys. But I've got a difficult name too! I get a lot of Aha's or like Ahjah (KWIM? Long a's).....very few know it's said like Asia and that it came from a Steely Dan album (70's band).....

I was closer to the greek word -- which means grace, btw -- but is pronounced with a hard ch (like car-iss).

Thanks for telling us because I was curious too! Smile

I would assume Aja is like Aisia.
Charys, I had a friend in H.S. with your name but it was pronounced Sher eece. So I thought that was the pronunciations.

lol, this thread has me cracking up! Smile I bet it's wierd not really knowing how to say someone's name and only knowing them online. I remember Aja saying how she pronounces her name a while back, but before that I was always saying it without the "s" sound, instead just saying it how its spelled.

My parents made my name up by combining three names together. Charity, Carisse and something else. Anyways, my mom had a thing for the letter i and didn't want to put that in there (like it should've been), so it's confused people ever since. Wierd, I know!!!

I could videotape myself saying it! maybe I'll do that tonight.... lol

Well I was way wrong too! I was thinking Char- iss. I have a book on tape at school and the little girl's name is Aja Rose so I was mucking that up too!! Sorry girls.

Now let me ask another while we are on this subject- Tia? I would pronounce it with a long E (TEE-a). Am I wrong?

BTW- teachers see all sorts of names and different spellings. I'm always so nervous on the 1st day of school when the parents bring them in. I would never want to mispronounce a name. The all time best one I've seen- Kitchenette (Key-shu-net). How do you name a child after a small kitchen? ROFL

I sound sooo horrible! I tried facing my camera in my face, but caved. Instead, you get to stare at my filthy floor.

Charys -- that's sooooo funny that you taped the floor! But now we've heard the proper pronunciation! LOL

Here's another one for "how could their parents name her that!?!?" DH went to school with a girl named Ima. Not too bad until you knew their last name was Bird and her middle name is Blue -- Ima Blue Bird! OMG!!!

There were twin sisters in think in TX in the beginning of the twentieth centrury who were Ima and Ura. That wouldnt have been too bad, except that they're last name was Hogg.

Charys, loved the audio, you're so cute!

Aja, I know you told us before but I had forgotten, and now all along I've been saying it wrong. Sorry!!!

So, I remember getting into a name dicussion with a woman I worked with (her name was Jane, nice and easy). She knew of a woman who named her daughter Pajama, but it was prounced Paa-ja-ma. And another one who named her kid Female Fa-mal-e because she saw it on her files for the gender and thought it sounded good.
