Digital templates - Edited to add a tutorial I found (below)

What is the purpose/use of digital templates? I downloaded one today and they are not like quickpages where you can add your pictures in. Are they just idea pages, basicly?

I think (I have never actually used the ones I have downloaded) that each piece can be used to cut a different paper and then all the pieces you have cut will fit back together to look like the template. Or something like that. I am anxious to hear from someone who has actually used one.

once you get the hang of them- digital templates are AWESOME! basically you can replace each layer of the template with your own papers and elements. They are about as easy to use as quickpages, but offer greater flexibility. For example, if there is a kit that you love that isn't available in quickpages but you want to be able to make an album quickly and easily with it, use a template! I'm usually able to put together papers and elements really well for my pages, but I struggle with composition and where to place everything on the page so templates are great to help me scrap. Heres an example of a page and template I made...

Here is a preview of the original template:

Here is the layout I made with it:

And here is the kit I used to make it:

That is cool. I couldn't get the layers to seperate on mine yet. I'm using a different program though so not even sure it is possible. I will have to play with it more later. Thank you, that was very helpful.

I got this cool program for photoshop called AV bros page curl. I think it was like $20 and I mostly use it for making curled ribbons and stuff. I've seen some really cool templates lately that have really detailed curls in them, heres an example of one I saw the other day...

yep, thats the hard part, a lot of templates are in .psd format so you can only use them in photoshop (or they'll open flat like yours did) BUT.... lots of designers are starting to offer templates in seperate .png files, so basically you get all the pieces of the template in a folder and all you have to do is open them in your program and combine them into one page

Its really not that hard! digi has been so much easier for me, I could never figure out all the tools and gadgets for paper scrapping, plus that undo in digi is a TOTAL lifesaver lol

Thanks for that Stephanie!!
I have never tried to do a page using a template. But I am going to do that on my very next page. I am curious now how it will all work and look at the end. I will be sure to share it when I am done.

I tried it tonight in Digital Image Pro and it was just too time consuming and frustrating to be worth it. The template I was using had too much shading so my wand tool wasn't picking up the layers correctly. If I had a template without a lot of shading, it would work great.

Here is a page I put together this morning using a template that I had downloaded. It was pretty easy, but it was time consuming. And although it makes a nice page, I found that using a template wasn't nearly as fun as making the page from scratch.
