I know I've been kind of scarce here lately, but I've been swamped and DH was out of the country for almost two weeks. Andrew had a diorama to do while DH was gone, so that took the time I probably would have used for scrapbooking (and I sewed three diapers, which you guys saw one of)
Anyhow, I'm rambling ... the purpose of this thread is to ask a favor. Many of you know I do a photo card business. Business is really slow, but at the same time, I'm scared to push it too much because I don't even have the time to catch up on my own stuff. Yet, I need four card orders in order to get enough $$ to buy the speedlite for my camera.
That being said, here's the favor - will you please look at my gallery? Should I stay in business? I feel second-rate compared to so many other creative women out there. I custom create for each customer, I'm wondering if I should do about 20 templates instead and let people order from that. But I like being different, letting each customer have a design just for them.
My prices are low (IMO), and most people who order from choose the design fee and then get the photos printed themselves. I don't know if I should start looking into other options, outside of the 4x6 and 5x7 - but then I'd have to be the one to get them printed. I can't afford to invest any more into the business (having spent money on the domain name, business cards, digital scrapbooking files for commercial use) so I think expanding into different sizes/papers is something of the future for me.
Anyhow, please be honest - that's why I'm coming to you. I value your opinion. I feel like we're all friends here and this is something I can ask of my friends.
Gwen, I will look at your site this afternoon when K isn't right in my lap.

I don't have any great advice unfortunately but wanted to say good luck in whatever you decide Gwen.

Gwen, yes, you should stay in business.....atleast through the holidays!
First of all, what I love about your cards are they are not the same templates that Snapfish, Walmart, Flash, etc. use. (I've checked...they use almost identical templates) Last year I received a lot of duplicates. That being said, what you offer is unique. Something no one else is going to get. Something created around the photo(s), rather than trying to fit the photo into a template design.
Your website is very easy to navigate and nicely done. I really love your work. I hope you get a lot of business this month and next! Would you mind if I sent an email out to all my friends with a link to your website?

I think your cards are very nice as well Gwen! As far as your question regarding templates.... I understand where you're coming from as far as making them unique for each individual... but for me at least, I'm a very visual person and I like to see what's out there so I can choose what I want then tailor it from there as to which changes I'd like. So I guess, it's my opinion that it wouldn't hurt to have a bunch of templates and then you could say something about the customer making any changes they want. (I think that it would also save you a bunch of time in the long run since all you'd need to do is insert pictures and change font or colors.
How do you advertise your business? Do use etsy or craigslist? Or?
I know that once I get more experience with photoshop elements that I'd like to try and sell some cards as well (mainly birth announcements).... and as i look around at various sites, it appears that most people prefer to pick out templates and then make changes from there, so that's what I'll be doing....
Anyways... good luck with your business and I hope you get lots of orders!!

Templates sound like a good idea. Then like Linda said, if they want to make changes they could.
I like your website as well. I would suggest to get more business maybe do both templates and personalized ones. That way if someone sees something specific they want in the template, they can just get that one, and if not they have the option of a custom-made one.
thanks girls! I sent out an email to a bunch of friends and family and have several orders pending (and one photo shoot to boot, but am not charging for that as it's more for me to practice than anything). what I think I will do is create templates at the same time I'm working on orders so that I kill two birds with one stone. because I don't have the time right now to spend making templates. most of the cards I did last year were from freebie kits, and not the commerical stuff. but I didn't know I'd continue as a business so I didn't sweat it at the time. I won't be selling any cards with those files this year since the TOUs for them don't include commercial use.
I like your cards as well and think that you should stick it out for at least the next month or two. Then re-evaluate. Good Luck!! You do nice work.
