First digi attempt Updated 2nd attempt

I'm not too pleased with this. I attempted it digital because I was going for a progression I could frame and it seemed easier and cheaper than paying 30 bucks for a frame 20 for a print and 15 for a mat. But I can't seem to get it to look like it was matted. Instead the photos look like they are floating on top of the background. I'm sure it's the program/elements I'm using. This was done in Elements 5.0 with no added software. I tried a few free elements I downloaded today but it seemed to make it look more scrap bookie instead of like something you would hang on a wall.

I saved it pretty large so I'll just link to deviantart instead.

Ok I worked on it some more today and I think this is much closer to the matted look. I couldn't get a good frame around the text but I think this works. Here's the second take...

I think it is from the shadowing that the squares are floating rather than indented. The shadowing is outside the squares instead of inside, does that make sense? I don't know photoshop though.

Yeah I can't seem to figure out how to change that. I'd like to get a shadow on the frames as well so it looks double matted but have yet to figure it out.

I meant to say I want a frame around the TEXT not around the frame...that sounds silly LOL

I agree, it's adorable! I don't know elements too well, I use photoshop, but I know in PS, you can add layers under text (like a frame or a custom shape) And if you want to change your shadows, you should be able to go to layer properties and change the direction/size/opacity of your shadows there. HTH!

that looks great!!! if you put the shadow all around it would look like a frame... is it just a drop shadow now (on two sides?!)....

great job! Smile

Great page! if you want that matted look, maybe try this...

Once you have each of the pictures in place, merge them all into one layer (go to the layers palette in the bottom right corner of PSE and click on each picture layer while holding down ctrl. after they are all selected, push ctrl+e)

Use the magic wand tool to select the area around your pictures, then do shift+ctrl+i to select the inverse

keeping this area selected, click on the background paper in your layers palette, then hit delete to clear that area.

Move your pictures layer so its beneath the background paper layer. They should show through since you'be basically "cut" holes in your paper

add a standard drop shadow to your background paper

Hopefully that works and gives you the look you were going for! you can also play around with the layer styles in PSE on your paper to give it more of a matted look if you'd like.

oh, it looks great!! I didn't get a chance to look at your first version earlier, but now I'm looking at both, and your second really does look so much better! I really like all of the enhancements you did on it. Wink Let us know how it looks printed.
