A little frustrated...

Well I was finally going to get my scrapping space organized. I went to Lowe's, bought the wood for a nice shelf, some braces and brackets, a pretty color of paint and all! I painted the shelf with several coats (which took 3 nights), got the brackets screwed into it and went to measure and hang it. Now, for some reason I've hit metal and DH (being the over worrisome engineer he is) is convinced I'm going to hit some big electrical wire (I've never had this issues in nearly 6 years of decorating my walls in any house/apartment I've ever lived in) and doesn't want me to drill anymore (he tells me this AFTER there are 9 holes in my wall). Now, not only is my pretty wall ugly but my area is in a HUGE disarray and I have no clue where most of my stuff is Sad I'm just really sad my little scrapping goal has been put on hold. Sigh.

sorry to hear that.... that reallly bites. shouldn't there be a way to test to see where the electrical wires are? or the blueprints of the house? I would think they would have to be near an outlet etc not just running down a random part of a wall.

Hmmm...that is a HUGE bummer. I wish I could offer some guidance, but I am a BIG dummy in this department. I hope you can get it fixed soon though. Sorry. Sad

Wires usually run down the sides of studs, does that make sense. So if you are drilling into the studs, you wouldn't hit wires because they run down the side not on top. I'm still not sure what the metal would be though. DH builds though, so I'll ask him.

Sounds like some type of bracket, but that doesn't make sense. Regardless, this is a bummer. I hope you can figure something out.

Okay, so DH says that it depends on where you are drilling and aspects of your house. It could be venting, pipes, brackets around corners, or a screw/nail in the stud you are drilling into. He said electrical is possible too. He laughed at me and said he has more questions than answers with the basic info I gave him. Lol

Anyway, sorry about that. I really hope you figure out what it is so you can move forward.

Thanks guys! I'm just going to forget about it for the night and try to figure something out tomorrow.

Stephanie, can your DH tell me about how much weight 8 drywall brackets can support without studs? I'm tempted to just say forget the studs and move on if that is possible!

I dont know what it could be. but is it a newer house? Our rental is a 2001, and i hit metal 'brakets' in the wall sometimes too. It's very frustrating. i hope you get everything all together soon!

Just wanted to let you know I always just hang the shelf where it looks nice and really never drill into the stud (so far so good) I would hate to be put on hold like that and I hope you get it worked out. On a better note what color did you paint???
