Matching colors for LOs

Just wondering if there's a certain skill set to matching colors that I haven't heard of yet. LOL Seriously though, I often struggle to match colors or to come up with what other colors go with the backgrounds I choose like mats, etc. How do you do it? How do you decide what colors to go with your base paper?

I have a color wheel that I got at AC Moore for maybe $5 or so. I don't use it all the time, but when I do use it, it definitely helps me to come up with some different color combos that I normally would not have thought of. And many times the pages I use it for end up being some of my favorite pages!

Here's a link in case you never saw one:

I always choose my background page first, whether it be patterned or solid. If it's a patterned, I will match a solid w/ a color within the patterned paper. That will usually be my matte or maybe my title.

I know several years ago when I first started scrapping I went to beginning class and they taught us to go with colors that match/blend with your pics or colors that make a certain part of your pic pop that you are trying to make stand out. Sometimes I do that and sometimes I just want a certain paper for a certain pic. I spend about 50% of the time it takes me to do a LO choosing paper. It's hard for me too!

I think I'll take Katie's advice and get a color wheel. That may help me step out of the box!

I just go with what I have at hand, or what inspires me. I usually start with a piece of paper I like and go from there. I often go rummaging through my scrap bin to see what I have in there before I cut a solid piece of paper.

Like Kelly, usually 50% of my time spent on a layout is picking the colors! Usually I just do whatever I'm in the mood for, trying to pick colors up out of the picture. Or colors that go with the pics I'm using. So I'm not much help.

Feel free to post your pics and I can help you pick colors. That comes easy to me however I am horrible with journaling. When I scrap with my sister I always pick her colors and she helps me journal Smile I also have a book on picking colors for scrapbooking I can send it to you as soon as I unpack and find it.lol

Wow...neat idea about the color wheel. See, my problem is I can usually pick the page I want and the color for letters, it's just the extra colors that get me. Like for instance, Charys, that LO you did "embrace yourself" I think it was, I was really impressed with the colors you chose and thought they all looked so great together, and I would have NEVER thought to pick them.

I too try to match my papers with my pics, it just doesn't always work out. Tia, I will take you up on your offer though. Smile

usually I'm not too bothered by it and if I happen to be struggling I just hold the papers up to each other. If it doesn't look hideous, I use it. lol

I just pick out the colors in the photos that I want to highlight.... never thought of the color wheel... maybe I should give that a try to spice things up! Thanks for the suggestion!

Carrie, I have a tough time too, that is why with my digital scrapping I general stay with the same kit rather than skip around. That doesn't help you with paper, but just telling you that your are not alone.

I did find a color wheel online once. I'll see if I can find it again.

Thanks Carrie! Actually on that layout I just though yellow would be a good addition because of a very cool sweatshirt Kayson's auntie embroidered for him with his name on it. It's brown and yellow. So I can't take credit there.
