new mom question about diapers (OT)

OK, I'll start by saying I am not cloth diapering. No offense or issue with those that do, i just don't plan to.

If you use disposable, what brand do you use/like best? They are so expensive to buy so I don't want to "trial and error" them. I'll I've used so far is the Pampers Swaddlers. I've had a problem with them leaking on Tate. I tried to open a box of 1-2 size diapers that are a little bigger and that seems better but I'm just not sold on them.

Any suggestions?

we do cloth diaper most of the time (or should I say did b/c DS is PT'ed :yahoo:) but we used disposables at the beginning and we use them for daycare also.

when he was little, we did use the pampers swaddlers. when he got a little bigger, I decided to try Target's brand, and they work great for us. he has worn those at daycare and while on vacation, etc. ever since. not sure how they fare with itty bitty ones, since he was around 3 months when we tried those first, I think.

take that with a grain of salt, though, b/c different build babies do better with different brands sometimes. oh and I always foudn that pampers ran smaller than huggies, when we did use the little sizes (NB, 1) before moving into cloth.

When Kayley was tiny we used Pampers Swaddlers because we were given a TON at our shower. I liked them well enough and they worked well for Kayley. Once we ran out of those we went with either Luvs, Target Brand, or BJs Wholesale Club Brand. She is still using diapers at night and we have been using Target brand for nights.

I truly believe "all bums are created different" because Pampers are THE ONLY diapers that worked for both of my boys. Seriously. And I hate that because I'm a HUGE bargain shopper and I've tried Walmart, Target, Sams, Luvs, etc. etc. Sad All of them leak except for Pampers. Personally I hate Huggies. Every single diaper would leak with those. So, sorry, not much help here. :/ I think it really depends on the baby's build. Just buy the smallest bag possible of a few different kinds and find what works best.

Huggies were crap for us until after size 2. They also don't last as well overnight. Pampers swaddlers worked great on all my kids, but especially the boys. I also liked the Walmart White Cloud brand but had to change them a little more often.

Okay, now for the obvious that most new moms get mentioned to them at the hospital... are you making sure to point his penis down when you change him? If it's up, it's VERY likely to leak out.

You were also good to try the bigger size. Too big or too small can cause leaking depending on where it is. My kids never fit the weight suggestions and either were in a type longer or shorter. Like Charys said, it all depends on the baby.

Confused yet? LOL

Charys- My first 2 were Huggies Supreme only because that is the only thing they didn't react to. I was so excited that Katie only needed regular Huggies and am loving the Josiah prefers cloth.

We use cloth too, but also disposables. I HATE spending money on diapers. When Miles was little we tried Target's brand and I really liked them. Now, we use Luvs and we have been for quite awhile and love them, as well as the price!

I recently tried Target brand again now that he's older. Never again (unless I have a little baby to diaper again...I liked them then!). They were so nasty after a 12 hour night I could have PUKED. Seriously.

One thing we've started doing is ordering our diapers on Amazon. They have a Subscribe & Save program where you get the diapers delivered to you (free shipping!), and they're 15% off! If you sign up for "Amazon Mom" you get an ADDITIONAL 15% off! With the Subscribe & Save you can choose how often you want the diapers delivered and they'll send you a notice when they're about to ship & when you'll be charged. You can go in and cancel it at anytime, or if you're running out of diapers you can have them ship sooner.

I have to just say that when I read the title of this thread I got a HUGE smile on my face! I am just so happy for you and I'm so glad that you are having to worry about this! Biggrin Congrats again!

We used Huggies for both Evan and Lindsay. Well, aside from our brief journey to the world of cloth. Wish I had kept up with that actually! But yeah, Huggies seemed to fit our kiddos better and I can usually get them cheaper with coupon deals at the drug stores. Good luck finding what works best for him!

i used swaddlers on Ryan when he was little and they worked great, and then cloth, and then back to pampers, then now undies Smile

With Kylee, we started using swaddlers because that was what we were given in the hospital but she got chemical burn from them. and i mean her little cheeks were bleeding. she was like 4 days old when this happened, so be careful with those! but now she is huggies little movers or whatever they are called, and they work great. They hold a ton of pee and she has never leaked out. I love the back elastic as well. the regular huggies felt like paper, so we made the step up to the little movers, and i think they are worth the extra money.

I have chunk chunk babies as well (ry was 9lb 10.5oz at birth) and he went straight to 1s, and at about a month old or so he was in the 1-2s.

Thanks girls, I've had several tell me target brand was their fave now. I think I have a few of them left over from a diaper cake I made (b/c they had polka dots on them so I thought they would be cute for a diaper cake) so I may try them.

Yes Michelle, we are pointing it down! Wink Maybe I just needed to go up a size. Lord knows he is a tank!!! The 1-2 size is taller and he seems to be leaking out the back on the top so maybe that will do the trick. His little bum is small and narrow but his Buddha belly makes up for it.

Oh, yeah, I should also mention we are taking 4 oz. every 3 hours during the day b/c he doesn't let me go any longer and he's just about to bust out of 0-3 months! ROFL I have a feeling diapers won't be my only problem.

Please don't think I'm complaining... he's just about the best thing ever this side of Heaven! I love being his mommy!!

Just wanted to congratulate you on your precious little guy  and second what everyone else said that all babies are different as far as which diapers will work!

Like others, I use Pampers through size 2 but then I switch to Huggies. My oldest daughter was pretty chunky and I thought they fit her well. I have occasionally used other brands (LUVS - thumbs up/Target - thumbs down!), but I always end up back with Huggies.

I also just signed up for Amazon Mom and Subscribe & Save ... wish I had done that three years ago!!! You should definitely look into it when you settle on a brand.

Oooh, also wanted to add that my newest little guy peed out of every kind of newborn diaper we had, too, which I NEVER experienced with the girls...I declare, he could pee and soak his clothes (and me!) and his diaper still was dry...go figure. I just had fasten his diaper REALLY tight (obviously not hurting him/cutting off circulation ) - Anyway, good luck!!

Yeah, I agree with State Chick that it's totally a boy thing. I mean it seems that the boys pee out of them at night. NOt sure why that is. Keeran never overpeed a diaper. Weird. I vote Target brand too...my faves for ALL three of my kiddos. Smile

I too LOVE how you are posting things like this....so awesome!!! LOL

I agree with the ladies, seems it all depends on the child. We tend to go with Pampers though and Luvs.

Definitely once u figure out what brand works for you Pampers, Luvs, Huggies...and going up a size makes a huge difference too. My kids are skinny ones but bc they are very tall we always are the next size up. Definitely do the amazon mom subscription and then subscribe and save. Great deals on diapers. I just purchased size 1 pampers for baby for under 7 cents a diaper. If you don't have any of the codes from american baby etc to stack with the subscribe and save let me know I'll track some down for you.

Here's the link of all the steps to do the Amazon mom deals over and over.

We used Pampers Swaddlers with Mason when he was an infant, and up until size 2-3. We also used the Luvs that were given to us, but mostly Pampers. I used the cruisers for a while too once, although I started having to use the Huggies Overnights at night because he was leaking EVERY night. After they changed the Pampers to the DryMax, I started buying Huggies Little Movers, not because they affected him, they didn't, but just because I had heard of so many people having issues.

Now we are in training pants/underwear except for naptime/nighttime!

Brittany, I have only been able to use an extra coupon besides the subscribe & save and amazon mom discounts the very first time I did it. Now I have 20% off codes from my Parents mag occasionally and I can't use them w/all the deals I'm already getting. Am I missing something, or did it only work for you the first time too?

I think it's a trial and error thing. I prefer Huggies these days, but Luvs are also pretty good. I remember using Pampers with Andrew, but I find that they leave more residue than others (the beaded gel stuff). Store brands are usually pretty good, and I use them too. For me, it depends on what's on sale and what I have a coupon for. Jack's in cloth diapers about half of the time (I need to buy more for him since he's outgrown a lot of his), so I'm trying to be economical for the rest of the time he's in disposables.

Ashley-
As long as u do the following you should be able to repeat:
1. cancel the subscribe and save subscription you have after you receive the shipment.
2. as long as the amazon diaper 20% off codes are of different exp date

So far I've used coupons with 11/30 12/31 1/31 and now there just were 2/28 ones in the american baby mag.

Hope that helps. If u have any other questions just ask and I'll try to answer them as best as I can.

With my experience with all of my kids (yup lots of diapers) it didn't seem to matter with my kids what gender they were, that they all worked best with Huggies. It was with the twins that we didn't even bother diaper testing anymore. When they went to size 2 diapers, we added the size 3 nighttime Huggies for all of them (yeah, three kids were even wearing the same sizes at the same time, still could if Journi weren't mostly trained, so that made it a bit easier!) and bumped it up a size when they outgrew their daytime size. Rarely has it been a problem with leaking. When we tried the swaddlers on Journi, they literally fell apart. The tabs fell off, the outer layer was separating - it was awful. We usually buy our diapers and wipes in bulk at Sam's Club, especially when we don't have coupons.

We loved the swaddlers that the hospital sent us home with...but did not love the price. We too used the White Cloud ones from Walmart...but before Xavier was completely out of diapers they quit selling them. So I tried a bunch of different store brands....and didn't like any. The Target brand were okay (and a couple close friends loved them for their kids) but Xavier's pee reacted funny with them and as soon as he peed they smelled horrible! We settled on Luvs. They worked great at a great price for a non-store brand diaper.
