At the hospital

So, me feeling queezy and crampy yesterday wasn't 'nothing' afterall. After all day of just getting worse to the point I could barely drag myself off the couch I called and was told to come in to be evaluated. So I packed the kids up and brought them to my moms and drove to the hospital (dh was at work), I hadn't noticed contractions much until I was driving but I still didn't think they were anything to worry about. Silly me!
So they put me on the monitors in triage and I was having contractions about every 3 minutes, a look at my history and they got me into a room and started an IV, contractions weren't letting up so I am now on magnesium sulfate...which is no fun at all. They were going to try terbutiline like I had with my first but my heart rate has been high so they didn't want to do that. They also ended up giving me a steroid shot. So, I'm still on the magnesium and my contractions are just finally slowing down to what they'd like to see. So far the plan is to start weaning me off the mag around 5-ish and see how I do, one more steroid shot around 7pm and *hopefully* I can go home tomorrow morning if my contractions don't come back. They did say that if my contractions don't stay away after they wean the mag. they'll restart it until I've had the second steroid shot 24 (or was it 48?) hours and then they'll try weaning me off it again. At that point if he's coming, he's coming.
Obviously I'm really hoping the contractions stay where they are at and I can go home tomorrow and bake this little guy another 2 weeks so I can deliver at the hospital I want with my midwife. And a birth buddy reminder, put those numbers in your phone now Wink I procrastinated and didn't but it's going in my phone now. Luckily dh brought me the laptop so I'm not so bored today. I needed the distraction, I'm really missing my other babies today.

no update from the dr yet, it's almost 6pm. My last two big contractions were almost 20 minutes apart though, so that's a good sign, hopefully they can wean me off the mag and keep them at least 15min apart and I can go home.

they haven't checked my cervix since I was admitted, at that point she said my cervix was almost completely thinned out but still 2cm. Not sure if 'almost completely thinned out' and 80% are the same thing? I'm sure they'll check again before they let me go.

Yikes hope you can keep LO in for a while longer. I would think that 80% and almost fully thinned are the same since really, 80% is rather close. You and I are due on the same day, scary that you may be having your LO really soon. I hope that the contractions stay away and that when they start weaning you off they remain at bay and you can go home. Please KUP with any and all updates. Thinking of you! :openarms:

Hope they can wean you off the mag easily and keep that baby baking longer!

And what is the DEAL with Sept babies and wanting to come early? I think we have had more than our share of preterm labor!

Just got the second steroid shot and they cut my magnesium dose in half. ***fingers crossed***
It's shift change so I haven't really been able to talk to the nurse about the 'plan' now, but they know I want to go home...so hopefully they'll try to do what they can do get me off meds tonight so I can leave in the morning. I don't know that I've ever been so anxious to go home! I'm pretty lonely too, dh was here last night but then he had to go home, sleep and work, and could only come visit me for 1/2 hour before he had to go get the kids. I had a nice cry when he was here so I feel better yet I feel bad I spent all of our time crying. I'm just way too emotional right now, I want to go home and cuddle with my babies before there's another one

I hope you get to go home. Mag completely sucks I hated being on it. your lucky if they let you go, they wouldn't take me off the mag till 24 hrs after my 2nd steroid shot.

That is my fear! They've been saying that they definitely don't want me to deliver until at least 24 hours after the second shot, but I'm hoping that I'll do so good on the half dose in the next few hours they'll cut it back all the way tonight and let me go home in the morning. I know no matter what they said I won't be leaving before breakfast but I'm really hoping before lunch. I've only had 1 contraction in the last hour since the shot/cutting back on the meds, which is REALLY good for me. The only thing is I'm not sure if the change in dose would be noticable quite yet.

I'm about to go to sleep but I did get a chance to talk to the nurse. They definitely won't be turning the mag off tonight, she said they'll wait until the on call dr makes his/her rounds in the morning and if everything looks good they'll turn it off. She said they'll only need me here an hour or two after that so I still might go home before lunch. One can hope!

I'm glad it seems to.be working. I was surprised when I went into the hospital & they told me that after 33 weeks they don't stop labor. Ur almost 34 weeks so I'm glad they are still stopping it if they can. The longer he bakes the better...

I was kind of surprised, my midwife said last Wednesday they wouldn't stop it at this point but I'm definitely not complaining. The magnesium really stinks, but I remember the terbutiline having some pretty nasty side effects too, it's just that was 7 years ago now so maybe my memory is a bit off Lol the side effects from it are definitely not as bad, my dh walked in here this evening and said HE was cold, he's never cold when I'm not Lol but now I'm feeling a little chilled so my body must be adjusting to the lower dose. They turned the temp down in my room and have a fan going on me, which is SO nice to block out the hospital noise!
I was most surprised about the steroids, they didn't even attempt steroids with my other kids, but I was 34+ weeks when I went in with all of them.
Can you tell I'm bored? I can't sleep, just uncomfortable, baby moving like crazy and I've had a few contractions, which *really* stinks. The last two were 10 min apart, which wouldn't worry me at home but since I'm still on the magnesium and I know they won't stop it if things are getting worse rather than better... Sad
Did I mention how much it stinks that I was only half packed? Lol First, between me feeling awful and being home alone with the kids it took me an hour to get out of the house because I had to go throw together some stuff in my bag and then pack all the kids. My mom ran out of diapers, didn't have any baby tylenol (ds is teething), the girls only had pjs, a change of clothes and their toothbrushes and my mom's neighbor has a pool so they couldn't go swimming, oh and I obviously wasn't going to be trying to lift the pack and play into my car at that point so he didn't sleep the greatest and only took an hour long nap. Anyways, I didn't have my brush packed, which I didn't notice until *after* I took a shower of course and that is definitely one thing the hospital doesn't have laying around. Luckily they let me take a shower right before dh came so I called him up and got him to go buy one and bring it with Lol Oh and they gave me the option after my shower to throw on some of my own 'pjs' but all I had packed were my nursing gowns and those don't work the greatest with an IV (which is fine for after delivery...wasn't expecting to be in the hospital 2 nights with no baby) I didn't bring my own pillow...again, ouch! And I didn't bring a change of underwear, not that I've been allowed to wear any but when I leave I'd really like to put some new ones on but forgot to ask dh to bring me some...again not something I was expecting needing in my hospital bag. Oh and something to do! Obviously something I also wasn't expecting to be needing.

Just so I don't freak anyone out, I think those last two were flukes or something, I've only had 1 in the half hour since

They turned the magnesium off this morning. My contractions have picked back up to every 7 minutes, they aren't awful though and I'm pretty sure the goal was no close than 5 minutes apart. Who knows, the dr hasn't made his rounds yet.
My mom called and said my oldest made me a card that says 'Feel better soon mommy' and that when dh came and picked the kids up last night Josiah wouldn't even let him put him down. I guess dh was telling Josiah how much I missed him and my oldest asked if I missed her too  I want to go home!

Oh Mandi I'm so sorry that you're having to deal with this! I hope the contractions stay far enough apart so that you can go home, and so that your little man can bake awhile longer! It must be so hard to be away from your other kiddos, especially when you're feeling unprepared as far as not being able to pack everything they (and you) need. I hope you get good news today! Keep us posted!

Dr made his rounds. He didn't rule out me going home today but I'm not going home this morning. They said they'll see how things look in the next few hours. My mom wants to come up on her lunch hour and I think I might tell her no Sad Every time I've hung up the phone with her I've been on the verge of tears, I know she doesn't mean to make me upset but I don't think she understands that hearing about my kids right now other than the basics (that they are doing fine!) just makes me upset.

Oh and I saw my midwife again this morning. She can't do anything for me here Sad but it was nice to see her. She did feel my belly though, at my request as to how big he might be, and she thinks he's only about 5lbs Sad so again, really hoping he gets some more time in there!

5 lbs for a 34 weeker is not tha bad is it? What weights were your other early birds?

Can your Mom bring the kids into see you? I hate being away from DD.

Feel better girl (both physically and emotionally)! We are thinking of you!

My mom actually doesn't have them today, she's back at work, she had them most of the time since I've been in the hospital though (dh's mom took them a few hours yesterday morning before she had to work so my mom could work some since my mom can work from home if needed, thank goodness!). DH has off today so he has them, he's taking them to the zoo this morning and then it's DS' naptime and *hopefully* I'll know if I'm going home or not by then.
It's not bad for a 34 weeker, I was just hoping he'd be a little bigger. My first was 34w5d and she was 5lbs9oz, 2nd was 35w and 5lbs5oz and 3rd was 36w4d and he was 5lbs 13oz....but under 5.5lbs gets the good old 'low birth weight' label. I guess I was really hoping we'd have a 6lber this time too so I'm a little disappointed. Maybe the steroids will help beef him up a bit Lol In good news nothing is getting worse!

Or the Yankee's and Giant's will be knocking on your door??? Sign the boy up!!!!

I'm sorry about the news of you not going home. Sad The good thing is, if he decided to make his appearance, he's in the best possible place. The downside IS being stuck in the hospital(DH and I would have the same problem, juggling is work schedule, the kids, etc) and no one to keep you company.

Like I told Cheryl when she was in the hospital. These are the times I wish we all lived closer.

I hope you are able to come home today. 5 lbs is still pretty good for 34 weeks (Brandon was 5lbs. 14oz. at 34w1d).

so things are looking good, contractions have backed off to maybe 4 or so an hour? I haven't really kept track lately but they definitely aren't as often as they were. The nurse was in here a little bit ago and said she thinks if things stay at what they are right now the dr will let me go home at 4 when he comes back for rounds!
