Hurricane Irene? (OT)

Anyone on here thinking they will be in the danger zone? How are you preparing?

We're about an hour outside of DC (west)... and I'm not sure what to think. I don't know how far inland the storm/rain will travel. We're already having some weird wind... coming from the opposite direction than normal today.

I'm thinking we'll gather some bottled water and snack items and make sure we have batteries in flashlights and a few things like that set up. My friend and here baby is supposed to be flying in from St. Louis on Friday and leaving on Monday. I hope the whole weekend isn't one nasty storm...

We live about an hour southeast of DC. I'm hestitant to believe anything the weather people say. But I hope it misses us! I don't want to deal with power outages.

We are in Richmond, so according to the latest info we won't get hit hard. But I lived in Florida one summer and learned from four hurricanes how off the weather ppl can be. So we are planning and preparing. Dh has a generator for if the power goes, though it is mostly used to keep his fish tank, our fridge, and a portable a/c unit running. We have a garage and the cars will go in there. We need to buy some extra flashlights. Dh has a lot of family in the area, so if we are out of power for more than a day, dd and I will go stay with one of them. Im just praying we all stay safe and I don't go into labor this weekend!

It's not going to hit where I currently live, but we got hurricanes on a regular basis where I grew up (and my parents are probably going to get hit by Irene as well). Pretty much just what you've mentioned- make sure you have some water on hand, and some food that you don't have to cook in case you lose the electricity. Flashlights, batteries, etc. We used to tape or board up the two big picture windows, and the windows facing the direction the storm was coming from, but it probably won't be bad enough to make that necessary where you are. We were right on the water, where it was making landfall.

We are far enough inland in NC to only have 20% chance of rain for the weekend. I'm not worried on my end, but am thinking of those of you in VA,DC, etc. Stay safe and yeah, hurricanes are unpredictable, so a little extra caution never hurt.

I think we will just be getting some rain. But I hope all of you in the danger zone will be okay and stay safe. Smile

DH picked up a bunch of bottled water and some batteries yesterday on his way home. We already have a pretty well stocked pantry due to stocking up for baby day... so, we should be fine if we lose power at all over the weekend.

It was crazy! I was napping when it happened, I didn't know I could get out of bed that fast. Everything is fine, we didn't even have anything fall or water outside of dh's tank. There was some damage at the epicenter in the country north of Richmond, a couple collapsed buildings and a school or two has structural damage. Everyone is in really good humor about it here, except that the news keeps making it sound like the epicenter was near DC and there aren't any closer cities and how the earthquake affected martha's vineyard in NY

And honestly, most ppl thought it was a loud truck on their road or an unbalanced washing machine. Some ppl heard more noise than felt shaking, I felt a lot of shaking.

Apparently I've just been notified our mayor has issued a mandatory evacuation of all hospitals in this area. Tomorrow I will be told where I'm going
