I did it to myself??? Boob issues...

I think I have a plugged duct or worse on my right boob. It started Tuesday when I waited a little too long to pump. My right boob is in really bad pain from my nipple to the left side. I think it's a blocked duct because I feel lumps in my boob that are really painful to the touch but they go away after I massage and pump for about 20-30 minutes. It was getting better yesterday but the pain is back today. It is so unbearable. I don't know what to do other than pump every 2 hours now, or pump longer??! The boob is reddened too in the area where it's painful and has the lumps. What am I doing wrong? I have the right size cups on and have been wearing a loose but right size nursing bra and nothing seems to work. I hope it's not anything worse. I have my 5 week post partum appt on Wednesday but I don't know if I can hold off till then. Any ideas?

Heat & rub it when you pump is what I do when a duct is blocked.

I had my first blocked duct just the other day. A hot shower and massage helped get the plug out. If you are concerned call your OB. Do you have a fever?

I honestly haven't checked. Tuesday I felt like I had one. My body literally hurt and I had chills even tho the apartment was hot. I think sleep deprivation is playing a factor too. I'm working on that. I've been doing showers/massages too and they help but it seems to be temporary. This is not my first plug either but I've never had one this bad. I'll just have to ride it out and see. I'm about to take a hot shower and pump again. I'm going to go back to every 2-3 hours and every 4 hours overnight.

If the skin is red and warm to the touch, you have mastitis and you need antibiotics. Do you have a fever at all?

Temp = 99.2. looks like it is. I'll retake later then may go in for antibiotics

You may not have to go in, just give your ob/mw a call and explain your symptoms. I have a tendancy to get mastitis and after DS1 all I had to do was call with my symptoms and they'd call in antibiotics for me. I wouldn't be *too* worried about 99.2 but mastitis can get bad FAST. After DD2 I literally couldn't drag myself out of bed. You'll feel very lethargic and flu-like if it already mastitis. For now keep that breast as empty as possible, pumping as often as you can on that side to keep it completely empty. Another thing that helps is to sit in a bathtub if you can and put a warm washcloth over the spot and massage it. I hope you are feeling better soon!

soak in a hot bath and keep trying to massage out the lumps. When I had mastitis, the only thing that made it feel better, besides antibiotics, was to massage the drainage (really gross) in a hot bath.

Thanks ladies! I'm sleeping and monitoring my temp every hour and drinking lots of water, and of course pumping every 2 hours. The thing w the mw is that the hospital I was being treated at is so screwed up I have no idea who my current dr is and no idea how to get in contact with them. There's an urgent care center around the cOrner that closes at 11. If mt temps continue to trend upward I'm going to go in. Last temp reading at 7:11 was 101.3. It was 101 an hour prior.

Honey, dont wait, go in now.

mastitis doesnt get better on its own and it can turn into sepsis pretty fast.

Go get the medicine. You NEED it.

I'm here. I decided to come in cause my SO has to go to bed soon cause he works early and has to get up at 3am. Fever has gone down a bit but it's for the best. Thalia needs her mommy to be feeling well to take care of her. Thanks again ladies.

Make sure you are also trying cold compress. The swelling that occurs when you have a plugged duct/mastits can be relieved with cold and it can allow the blockage to pass. Also, look into taking lecitinas a supplement after you are feeling better. sometimes moms have milk that is more prone to have blockages because of the fat content. It will help reduce it. Here is some info on it from kellymom.com

Hope you're feeling better. Was it mastitis?

An infection in the breast.

Hi ladies! I'm feeling better tho not 100%. When I went into the urgent care I was seen by a PA because by the time I went in the dr had gone. She took a very close look at my boob, saw it was reddened, felt it was hot. She said cause of the fever it's definitely an infection and took urine to rule out a UTI. She felt it some to try and pinpoint if I had an abcess (sp?) which hopefully I don't but was not able to because by that time my boobs were full again and had lumps all over them. She said she wold treat it as an infection and prescribed antibiotics and said to f/u with my GYN which I do have an appointment with my new GYN this Thursday. She said I had a small amount of bacteria in my urine but that it could be from the skin so she sent it for cultures. I woke up today without a fever and the pain in my boob has subsided but I did isolate a hard painful spot in my boob after I empty it. I didn't feel it before because it's actually on the under side near the nipple, it's hard and very painful to the touch. I'm continuing to massage, take warm baths and massage and putting ice packs on it and just hoping for the best. Wednesday I have my 5 week post partum appt at the hospital where I gave birth and Thursday I meet w the GYN at the new place I'll be going to. Overall I'm feeling much better just not 100%. thanks so much for the advice and concern. I'll kup. Also she said I should pump and dump for the time being since I have so much saved in the fridge because they don't know what type of infection it is? That's where I'm at ATM.
