Kyla's 6 week appointment

She is a tank! She is weighing in at 11lbs, 5oz (95th percentile) and 22" (75th percentile).

Before I even mentioned my oversupply of milk, the doctor asked because Kyla has a textbook growth pattern for my problem. I have been told no more pumping (ouchy!) and to feed from one breast for three hours and never offer her the second at a Feeding (she needs more hind milk).

Apparently she also has a Bit of reflux so we were told not to let her lie flat for the next two weeks to see if it makes a Difference in her grunting and congestion. If the change in feeding patterns and the change in position doesn't make a difference, we may look into medication.

I also had my check up. I have been having some of the same signs of ppd (I thought I was going to avoid it but now I am not so sure). My doctor is going to do another check in two weeks unless I get worse before then. I am having about 1 or 2 bad days a week (where I want to leave the kids in the house and just walk away and spend the day yelling at them - even kyla).

Good news is my tearing and cervix is all healed. I do have fissures around my butt hole from constipation but I had that with dd1 as well.

Thanks for reading!

I'm glad that the doctor had some possible solutions for you- I hope it solves the problem. I'm so sorry that you are starting to experience some of the signs of ppd! But that is great that you are on top it as far as talking to your doctor about it- I hope that it gets better really soon so that you can enjoy this time with your girls!

I have so many questions about the oversupply of milk/rapidly growing baby. I think we're experiencing something similar, but I don't know for sure if it's that, or if he's just growing quickly because that's the way he is. I have two friends whose babies have also grown like this, and their pediatricians didn't have them change anything. So far mine hasn't said anything either, but the last time he saw Ronan was at three weeks, and he won't see him again until two months. But he's already close to 12 lbs and he's only five weeks! DD was four or five months old before she hit 12 lbs! I know I tend to have overactive letdown and I really think I have too much fore milk. When does this become a problem? Is it bad for them to put on weight so fast? Sorry for hijacking your thread- I'm just so confused about this whole issue!

Have you tried pumping before putting him to breast? I have to pump before my first few feeds during the day because it's really bad. i only pump for 1-2 minutes because it goes so fast. That way she is isn't gulping as bad as she was. poor thing was so gassy from trying to keep up with it.

Breastfed babies do tend to grow faster in the beginning and then even out towards 6 months. Do you hear large gulps or does it sound like he's gasping between swallows? That's a good sign that you have an overactive letdown.

PS Reagan was at 9.5 lbs at 3 weeks  and i did a pre/post weight at the office and she was taking 2.3 oz @ 5 minutes....way too fast! i'm pumping a tiny bit before morning feeds and block feeding (2 feeds off same breast before switching and never feeding from second breast.

You are sounding like you have the same problem. I wonder if you should see an LC for advice...

Kat- I'd love to hear more about overactive letdown, ect. My ped really doesn't know much about breastfeeding but I know I have one (he chockes and gasps with almost every feeding still) He's a fast growing baby too. At 1 month he was 10lbs and 8 days later he was 11lbs! He's grunting a ton too, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Don't want to hijack this thread though Smile
Glad everything is looking good with Kyla! I hope you don't develop PPD, but it's good your dr is keeping on top of it.

Cassandra's growing like a weed too - she's almost 10 lbs now and 1 month old (started at 6 lb 11 oz). my LC says that I do NOT have an oversupply or overactive letdown, but Im seriousy questioning it. I do block feed anyway, and always have.

I would like for my supply to start regulating a bit, though...

I have been told not to pump because we are trying to get my supply down. I was pumping 3 5oz bottles a day and still exclusively breastfeeding.

I do have an overctive letdown as well. Kyla starts gulping fast, gulping air, pulling away and choking (sometimes milk comes out her nose). She also starts gulping without breathing and then pulls off and cries.

I must say this kid can rival most teenage boys in the burp department!

Sounds like Kyla is growing really well. Sorry about the ppd. I was feeling really depressed this last week but I'm feeling a bit better now so I'm hoping it was just a bit of the baby blues.

Erin- thanks for letting me ask the question on your thread! This is new to me, so talking to someone else who is dealing with it is really helpful. By the way, how is Kyla doing with the congestion she had? Has the mucous cleared up that was giving her trouble?

Kat- thanks for the info!

I went ahead and emailed my doula (who is also a lactation consultant), so hopefully she can help me get it figured out.

Glad everything seems to be going well. Hopefully you can get your supply settled down. Sorry about the ppd. I think I may be starting to have signs myself for the colic is really wearing me down.

The congestion is still bad but she is no longer throwing up from it. We do know it is caused by reflux (she spits up out of her nose which causes the congestion). Hopefully over the next few weeks she will get better.

Heather - I am glad you are seeing someone.

My heart goes out to everyone who thinks they maybe dealing with ppd. Like I have said, I have had it and may be getting it again. Do not hesitate to go on medication! I am fortunate to have a great medical team looking out for me (I get weekly calls from a nurse and biweekly doc appointments). I hope you can all get a support systemic place.

My symptoms right now are wanting to walk out of the house and leave the children. I am not close to following through with it luckily. For those of you that are religious, when I find myself yelling at my kids all day (yes, on bad days I find myself yelling at Kyla even), dd1 and I sit down ha e a cuddle and say a little prayer - it helps keep myself in check.

Erin, I too have noticed that when I nurse Daniel on a particular side (the breast that is typically an overproducer) he will gulp and choke and pull off. I have also noticed that milk will dribble out of a nostril. Is this because of my forceful let-down?

He also sounds congested-like there is snot in his nose, but I can never see any nor do I get anything when I use the little suction in his nose.

Glad to hear the appointment went well.
