Lip and Tongue Tie Appointment

Yay!!! Yahoo

The IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) that my doc referred us to called today!

Evie has an appointment to see her at 12pm (PST) on Friday and then an appointment with the Pediatrician she works with who can treat it at 1:40pm!

I'm sooo excited to be getting this done and over with!

I went to a LC yesterday and she identified a tongue and lip tie in my little guy.

I don't have a great camera, but I can try to get pics if you'd like.

I will try to get pics today sometime. If she confirms then we are going straight to fixing it. She even went so far as to schedule THAT appointment for us at 1:40. So I won't have time for pictures, unless they let me as they are clipping them.

I'm tired and it was a long day.

Warning, over supply mentioned:

Briefly, no tongue tie whatsoever and the lip tie, while very thick and prominent, is not affecting breastfeeding and the doc was not comfortable clipping it because of how thick it is. He suggested referring to a pediatric dentist in a while to see what their opinion is about clipping it. He said, that likely, she'll "break" the tie accidentally falling and hitting her face when she gets older and learns to walk. He warned us that it will bleed a LOT when and if that happens.

He examined her mouth quite extensively after the IBCLC ruled out lip and tongue tie for cause of the nipple trauma. Her tongue has a great range of motion, out, up, side to side, and curving (around fingers and such). Her palate is perfectly shaped, no bumps or indentations. Our latch (while still difficult to achieve consistently) is deep and she took 3 oz off the first side alone.

The IBCLC confirmed forceful letdown symptoms and stated that it's probably the main issue combined with her mouth is small. She suggested football hold for her to get a better shape to her mouth (she was keeping the side of her mouth that I couldn't see sucked in, but the side I could see was flanged fine) and stated that her chin is slightly recessed and I have to attempt to give her a double chin to get it so that my nipple is not blanched and squashed when she's done eating.

While we were feeding I had 3 letdowns inside a 15 minute feed where she got 3 oz. The IBCLC was impressed by that. She said that I'm very lucky to have such efficient breasts. (side note, if I have such a great supply... how come my cup size is smaller than with my last baby where I leaked all the time and forced him to pop off the breast cause he couldn't control the flow?)

She also was able to confirm vasospasms, noting a classic tri-phasic color pattern while I was experiencing the pinching sensations deep inside my breast tissue. The tip of the nipple went white, purple, pink. These are likely caused by the trauma of Evie clamping and thrusting my nipple up to the roof of her mouth while trying to control my forceful letdownS.

She helped me to get her latched on in the football position (not easy on my back.. this is going to take practice) and when she came off my nipple was not blanched and squashed like usual, it was the ideal "raspberry" nipple.

So, long story short. No clipping. Possibly later after we figure out who would be doing it and whatever, but only for the lip as her tongue has nothing to clip.

Am I relieved? Slightly. Am I still in pain? You betcha! And I expect to be in pain for a long while still until her mouth becomes big enough that gape is not an issue and I can achieve a "perfect" latch every time. Is she worth it? Most definitely!! Just bare with me while I clamp my jaw on her binky handle every time we nurse.

I'm one stubborn momma.

So I had to look up a better way to do the football hold. I just couldn't get past her kicking the back of my seat. I googled videos on it and one showed the lady putting the legs of the baby up the back of the seat and by golly it's working! Yahoo I just need to be able to get her latched on without having to swaddle her every feed to keep her hands out of the way. Lol

Glad you figured it out! I've never been able to do the football hold with either of my children. I just can't get it to work, and then I give up. Great idea looking up a how-to video!

Glad the appointment went well!

It seems on this board we either make way too much milk or not enough, where's the happy medium?

I agree the FB hold takes practice and it seems uncomfortable for baby but it was our hold of choice for the early newborn stage! Glad you found some help on the web!
