So, sorry I've been a little mia. CJ came down with a very mild case of his brother's cold so he was a little congested all week. I started having some horrendous pain deep in my right breast the other day and it got worse over the next day or two. I was feeling around noticed that it was really engorged on one side and painful to the touch. The pain traveled under my breast and around my back. I immediately thought of mastitis but I didn't have a fever or redness so I wasn't sure. I decided to call the doctor anyway just to be safe. I went yesterday and she noted that I was very plugged and confirmed that the area under my breast where I was feeling all that pain was infected. I'm allergic to penicillin so I'm on zythromax.
The thing is, I wonder if I'm doing something while pumping that's causing me to become plugged up. I increased the shield size as while ago so I don't think that's it. Is there any way to avoid this problem in the future? Also, I can't really feel the plugged ducts so how can I clear them up? I forgot to ask at my appt.

Girl I wish I had an answer! I was dealing with the same thing last week. I actually had a place on my nip that became abscessed, but what came out was a plug of milk. So I assumed it was a clogged duct??? Anyway my Doctor friend had called me in some meds so I didnt have to go in and be seen. I hope none of us have to deal with this again! I thought my boob was being cut off during every nursing session!
I'm sorry I don't have much advice. Do you clean and rinse your pump stuff well each time? I know its easy to get lazy sometimes especially at work. Cuz if not maybe there's some residue or even soap residue on your shields that get on the nips and get deep and cause the infection. Just a thought
