Question for the BTDT moms of late summer/fall babies.

Okay, so I know this is thinking WAY ahead, but I'm trying to find the "perfect" hospital picture/coming home outfit for baby.

My first was born in the spring and it snowed on his birthday. I got a long sleeve, footed sleeper for his outfit a few months before he was born and I was thankful I didn't have a short sleeve one.

My second was born in the winter, so no guesses there, long sleeve.

Since I'm starting my hunt now (if it's a girl I want pink & white & frilly), everything is still long sleeve over here (it snowed over the weekend). I've found a fairly cute one that I'm considering, but it's long sleeve. Should I wait a little longer for short sleeve? I know that baby's get chilled easily, so I'm wondering if I should go ahead and get long sleeve anyway.

The summer here tends to get fairly hot and sometimes it cools down a bit starting in early September. But since it was still snowing recently, I'm not sure if this summer is going to be longer or not.

*sigh*

I'm too picky.

IF you happen to have a girl, I would go with a really cute dress/outfit that possibly comes with a little sweater. There's lots of really nice dresses that come with the little sweater with one little button, and of course, you could buy a pair of tights and have a really nice girly blanket to cover her with.

My 2nd born (boy) was born September 23rd and at that time it was still nice here, but he came home in a long sleeved outfit that had a hood on it, along with a blanket covering him. It wasn't anything fancy but it was nice enough for his hospital pic and to bring him home :). Also for a boy, I've seen some outfits that have short sleeved shirts with pants, but have adorable little jackets to go with them, maybe something like that would work?

no advice b/c I had a June baby but this LO outfit will be the same one I took DD home it (gender neutral because she was also a surprise)

Good luck in your search! I can't wait for pictures of what our LO's come home in!

Of course, my other issue is my boys were "average" weight (just under 7.5 lbs), but they were swimming in the newborn size clothes, so this time I'm wanting to get Preemie 4-7 lbs (ish), and I'm having a tough time as there aren't really any places in town to buy that size (it's a small town). I'm even having a hard time online finding that approximate size.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to look for that size (besides Ebay & Etsy)?

DS1 is a mid Sept baby, His coming home outfit was a long sleeve/long pants one piece. I didn't pick it out my mom did, it's her tradition to pick out and buy her grandchildrens coming home outfit. On the day we brought him home it was a cooler day then it had been, so we were glad that he had the long sleeve/pants outfit to come home in. If I was buying the coming home outfit here is what I would do... I would buy the long sleeve dress that you like now (keep the receipt and tags on it) and maybe keep your eye out for a short sleeve dress with sweater. HTH

Since I have some time to kill and not doing much of anything, I went looking, here's a couple sites I thought might interest you. I think both the outfits shown down in the middle of the page for boys/girls was cute, but of course, everyone has their own tastes. Some of the other things on the site are cute, too!

http://www.perfectlypreemie.com/catalog/

This site looks interesting, has a bunch of different things, and it lists sized up to 11 months, so you could shop from there for a while if you liked something in bigger sizes Smile

http://www.nurtureplace.com/

Also, what about Target/Babies R Us? I know you said you're in a small town but I've heard people find all sorts of kids clothing in preemie sizes there. Maybe you could check online to see?

ETA: Amazon might have something as well?

I didn't do too much for the coming home outfit, just put a short sleeve onesie on (supporting the local university, naturally). It was team colors, so would have worked for boy or girl.

I cannot even remember if I put pants on the kid.

We brought her home mid-Sept, and weather here can definitely go either way at that time of year, but that day happened to be fairly warm.

I think final look was the onesie plus whatever blankets we tucked in around her to keep her warm enough, so I don't think it would have mattered if the outfit was long/short sleeved.

I like the idea of getting a short-sleeve something with a sweater/jacket and pants/babylegs. Layers are great for that time of year!

Brandon was a preemie. We were able to find preemie outfits at most of the big stores, Macy's BRU...they don't have tons but they have a decent enough selection. I have also seen preemie outfits recently at Target and Kohls as well.

I'm not sure what kind of outfit to buy either. Last summer was our first summer here in the valley and it was an unusually hot summer with a horribly hot September. It hit 112 in SEPTEMBER. I'm nervous about what it will be like this year. I will probably buy an outfit with layers so that we can adjust accordingly.

I found a lot of our preemie stuff between ToysRUs (we don't have a BRU here) and Walmart. My kids were all less than 6lbs at birth.
My oldest was a late July baby and I had a long sleeve t-shirt under her coming home dress and we covered her with a blanket. It was warm but I think when they are so new they have a hard time regulating their own temperature. If this baby is a girl I plan on doing a short sleeve dress with a sweater and some cute matching booties and hat. Haven't decided for a boy yet but it'll probably be something short sleeved as well with a sweater

I agree that planning something with layers is probably your best bet. So, something short sleeved with a sweater has you covered either way. DD was born October 2nd, and it was still HOT here, so she came home in a short sleeved onesie with pants that matched. But I brought two or three outfits to the hospital to make sure that I had something that would fit her and something that would be appropriate for the weather. Do you have a Babies R' Us around? They usually have a good selection of preemie clothes. Newborn clothes were big on DD as well, but I just had her wear them a little big rather than buying preemie clothes. I was lazy ;-).

I have to add, about the newborn sized clothes, were they 0-3 month clothes or specifically newborn clothes? My kids outgrew preemie stuff by 8lbs and at 7lbs they were definitely tighter fitting, I'd say they fit best at birth (5lbs 5oz- my smallest, 5lbs 13oz- my biggest) to around 6lbs. I mean, if someone brought a preemie outfit to the hospital and had an 8lb baby I can't imagine the preemie outfit would even fit, I'd go with newborn sized personally, even with the size of my kids...better a little too loose than too tight.

they were NEWBORN size. I couldn't believe it. With the second one I almost bought preemie, but didn't and then I wished I had.

Since the baby is a surprise gender baby, I will have one blue outfit and one pink outfit, not sure how much "extra" clothes I want to bring for our two-three day stay. With both my boys I just used the hospital clothes except for the picture and the going home, so...

I've still got time to figure this thing out.

I think I need to plan a shopping trip with MIL to the nearest mall. No big stores here. We have Wal-mart and K-mart and that's it besides grocery stores. Well, there's a Fred Meyer (owned by Kroger), but they have just as much stuff as the "marts". Besides Ross, that's it. None of them have much. Oh, there is a boutique downtown that I'm gonna go visit next week to see if they have anything, but again, they are on the smaller side (and expensive).
