Is anyone doing evening primrose oil (EPO) or red raspberry leaf tea to help prepare for labour?
For anyone that isn't familiar with these, EPO is supposed to have the same affect on your cervix as prostaglandin (cervadil) and help ripen it and prepare it to dilate. You can take it orally or you insert the capsules vaginally, or rub the oil itself on the cervix.
Red raspberry leaf tea acts as a toner for the uterus, supposedly making your contractions more effective when they do start.
Neither of these things are labour inducing, and whether or not they work, who knows! I started using EPO around 37 weeks last time, and started drinking the tea around 35, every day. Did it help? No idea! There is no true way to study it, would I have had as easy of a labour and delivery if I hadn't done it? No way to know. Both are very popular with midwives.
I will probably start again in a couple of weeks. I actually enjoyed the taste of the tea...but it was dead of winter last time! Not sure how much tea I want to be drinking in this weather!
You can drink the tea cold too. Or I hear you can take a pill of it too, though I haven't looked around for it. Might do that today.
I've been orally taking the EPO since Monday and there def seems to be an increase in discharge.
When I was pregnant with Heather, we had our appt and the Dr said my due date was the 14th of December, which kinda shocked us, because we had been going on the 10th the whole time. He 'forgot' to tell me the changed date, and told me right at the last minute . So, hubby went on a mission to 'induce' me lol. I drank the tea and omg it was grosssssssssssss! I had one cup and blech, I vowed to NEVER drink it again lol!
I don't think though, that I've EVER ate so much fresh pineapple and gone on so many bumpy rides in my life. It was a nightly thing to go get a coffee from Tim Hortons, and 'look at Christmas lights" which translated to, let's see if we can get this bab out lol.
Bumpy rides are about the most I'll do, I won't touch anything else, and after a while, I get sick of eating/drinking the same stuff over and over, so driving around is as much 'inducing' I'll do lol.
I will probably start the RRL tea at 37 weeks. I don't want to start it earlier b/c I have so many BH as it is and it is very easy for them to get a rhythm and even uncomfortable. I don't know about the EPO, I'll have to ask the midwife at my next visit.
So it appears you can take red raspberry leaf in capsule form http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Way-Ra...3363942&sr=8-1
But after researching it, I'm not going to because of the magnesium content. I'm potentially allergic to magnesium.
I had been planning on doing EPO, at this point I doubt I will. First, I wouldn't take it until 37 weeks and I'd be very surprised if I made it to that point right now. Second, I'm already 2cm and almost completely effaced....seems like it wouldn't be all that much benefit for me?
I've looked for the tea but couldn't find it and again, I just really don't think I'll need it. I have an irritable uterus as it is, I'd be afraid it'd get me into regular contractions since it's so easy to do as it is. I suppose if I did get to 37 weeks this would be something I'd try a little harder to find, I've heard it doesn't taste very good at all though

I had started a thread on evening primrose some time ago. I don't think I'll be able to start it while in the hospital tho. Right now I'm just too early to start being that I'll only be 34 weeks on Tuesday.

I really like the taste of the red raspberry leaf tea. I've had a few cups, but I keep forgetting to drink it on a regular basis, even though I mean to... oops! I've been planning to do EPO as well, but I haven't bought it yet. Maybe I should get going on these things since I'm almost 38 weeks!
when i was pregnant with DS2 I was SO anxious for him to arrive that I drank castor oil. GROSS. only had a little bit. and it did nothing. Looking back I think that was a really dumb idea. lol I am def. not doing any of that this time.
