Update on us

I have tried to get on here several times since being home and end up not being able to finish what I started. So, I'll do a short update then post all the birth story later on.

We got home Sunday afternoon. Sunday night was HORRIBLE!!! I was up until 5 am. Breastfeeding started off going well then it started not working at all. We tried using a shield but he kept collapsing it. He wouldn't latch straight on the breast for anything. But, we tried all night. I ended up giving him a bottle of formula around 4am and he slept for about 3 hours so I got a few hours of sleep after that.

Monday night, DH had to go to work. My mom stayed with me. I had a lactation consultant that lives down the road from me come over and try to help us. We actually got him latched without the shield and he did great. The next feeding, when she wasn't there, he wouldn't latch with or without the shield. So, after lots of tears being shed from frustration (me and him both), he got formula. I gave him formula all night and he did great. He has been peeing more and sleeping better. So, I finally was able to sleep a little bit last night.

My MIL is spending the night tonight and helping me out while DH is at work. I have had him on formula all day today and have decided that I'm just going to bottle feed. It's just worth he and I being so frustrated and all the tears. DH and I talked about it and he agrees with me and is very supportive of my decision. I am sad but I know it's for the best for both of us. My milk started coming in today so I've got cabbage leaves on them for relief.

This recovery has been rough to say the least. I go tomorrow and get my staples out which will help out alot with the pulling and tugging. We took Carter to the pedi today and he weighs 7#15oz which is what we were at discharge. So, at least he didn't lose much weight. It's taken me about 4 hours to write this so I'll stop here. Yay if you made it this far.

:bigarmhug: Glad everything is going well except the breastfeeding, you have to do what feels right for your family with that. A happy mom and happy baby are most important.

Sorry things have been so rough for you. I had a very hard time bf Brandon and we ended up switching to formula. I felt very guilty at the time but for our situation I think it was better all around. This time if it doesn't work out I'll know I at least tried, no guilt at all. I hope you start to feel better once you get your staples out. Take care.

Sorry that you had such a rough time with bfing :(. What about pumping and giving him that, and formula when/if needed? He'd still be getting all the bfing goodness just not the extra closeness etc from mommy.

Other than that, I'm glad that all is going well. Try not to beat yourself up too much, as was said by someone else, a happy mom and baby is what's most important. Try and get some rest while you have family coming in to help you. With formula feeding does come with some bonus's of extra rest, as they can feed/change/entertain while you sleep :).

Hang in there! :openarms:

Hang in there, remember it WILL get better! I'm glad to hear you all are at least getting some sleep and he hasn't lost any more weight.

Thanks for the update and I'm glad you are finding a way to get some rest.

If you do want to BF, I reccomend pumping. It took DD1 about a week to start latching and 2 weeks to latch and stay on at each feeding. However, pumping and trying to nurse and supplement can drive you a little crazy so depending on what is going on at home, it might be a little much Smile
