I had another bleeding appointment today. I also have a cervical polyp. Whether the bleeding is coming from that or the placenta is unknown but we are still not at any risk.
My question is, why is the steriod shot not given to every woman just in case they have preterm complications? Does it have drawbacks?
I was given the steroids when I was in the hospital with Brandon. My understanding is that they lose their effectiveness after around a week or so and there are some risks associated with repeated doses so they have to be very careful about when/if they give the steroid shots.

There is basically no medication out there that comes with no potential side effects. We use medications when we feel that the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Celestone is a corticosteroid. Use of these steroids can supress the immune system, making you more at risk for infection, can mask or prolong viral and fungal infections, and can suppress adrenal hormone function, among other things. As well, the effects on the fetus are short lived, so if you gave it, for example, at 24 weeks, and then went into preterm labour at 29 or 30, they would likely have to give you another dose.
We use in our at risk or preterm labour mums because the benefits to the baby's lung maturation outweigh the risks to the mum and baby's health. There is some question about repeated dosing affecting brain growth and development in the fetus (NOT related to the dosing they would be giving you if at risk for preterm labour).
On top of that there is the economic factor, this stuff is expensive, and to give it to every pregnant woman would be very costly. Also, no one would know for sure when to give it seeing as the effects are shortlived.
That is a good question. I know with my first (went into labor at first at 34w3d delivered at 34w5d) I asked about steriods and they said they weren't 'worth it' at that point but I never questioned further so I would assume there is some kind of draw back.
