When Lightning Strikes twice...

So since Friday I've been battling a pretty knarly mastitis on my LEFT boob. Oh yes! I was already on antibiotics for my right when Friday I was out and about with my SO and Thalia (her one month check up) and all of a sudden it hits me like being hit by a truck, it had not even been three hours since I last pumped and I found myself in sheer pain due to too much milk. I get hone and pump and the boob would not empty right. Then the fever and chills. I waited to see my new GYN on Saturday who prescribed me an antibiotic that's supposed to be stronger. He said if my fever spikes above 101 again to go in to the ER to be admitted for IV antibiotics, can you imagine? I'm starting to second guess this whole breast feeding thing. Today the fever finally broke but the boob is still not fully emptying, I've gone as long as 45 minutes with over 6 oz on the right and 2.5 oz only on the left. I used to get a consistent output on both sides. For now I'm aggressively massaging, hot baths, cold compresses, pumping pumping pumping lol. I feel like I'm wasting quality bonding time with my LO feeling so miserable. Sad

I'm so sorry you're going through this all over again! I wish I had a suggestion that would help, but you're doing all the right things to help it. What kind of pump are you using? Are you just pumping, or are you nursing as well? I hope you can get some relief!

I'm using the medela double electric pump in style advanced. I'm exclusively pumping. I forgot to mention that my left nipple now looks more like a rose than a nipple. Don't know why that is. I hope with time it all clears up. I'm supposed to start work on Thursday, I haven't been at work since august 2nd, I don't know how I still have a job

:bigarmhug: Hope you can get it cleared up soon! I've had mastitis with all my babies (except Isaiah, so far ***knock on wood***) and it usually isn't a recurrent thing so hopefully after you can get it to clear up you won't have to face these problems again

Sorry that things arent going very well but i wouldn't give up just yet. is there an LC in your area that you can see? or at the hosptial. i seriously thing you need to see them in person and have them access the pumping session in person. It almost sounds like a) your horns may be too small, b) you need to look at adding lecithin daily to avoid the plug ducts, c) you may need to make sure you are pumping closer to every 2 hours.

How much are you producing when you aren't plugged and how much did you get out this last session when you said it wouldn't empty completley/

I didnt say anything before but Im going to now. Be glad you can breastfeed at all and Im sure it hurts im not saying it doesnt but it really hurts my feelings with your post before complaining about too much milk etc. I dried up after 2 weeks and cried for days cause I cant provide for my child. It is still awful for me. Everyone is different and we cant help what happens but please watch what you say cause it can be sensitive to people.

My apologies for coming off as insensitive as that was never my intention. I joined this forum to meet women who I could learn from and maybe offer whatever I could. I am very much aware and never take for granted how fortunate I am to be able to nurse as very close relatives of mine were unable to for various reasons, this is the reason why I was going to donate my surplus.

I truly apologize that I hurt your, or anyone else's feelings on the site as that was never my intention.

Thanks everyone for the invaluable resource you have been to me in all these months. I wish you all continued success with your LO's.

I think we all need to be supportive, mastitis doesn't just hurt, it can be excruciating and is a VERY serious infection of the breast. I remember when I had it after DD2 I couldn't even manage to get out of bed. Stopping pumping wouldn't help though, it could actually make it worse, at least in the short term, and if you keep going you may or may not have any more problems with it, so I'd encourage you to keep trying and make sure you keep emptying your breasts.

Sorry you are dealing with this. Mastitis sucks!

If your nipple looks like a "rose" I think you may need a bigger shield? If the pressure on your nipple is to high it can crack it. Hth, I hope things get better.

oh and your"i wish you all continued success"sounds like a farewell...i hope you don't leave. We are supportive of everyone in troubles and successes.

DoUble mastitis? I have never had it and couldn't imagine it in both sides.

Like you I am over producing (with DD1 I underproduced and was on medication). I have to massage my clogged ducts every morning and pump before most feeds because I am nursing!

We all have struggles and we should be supportive of everyone situation.

As parents we will feel quietly and question every decision we make. I honestly feel no apologizes should be givn because you are posting and asking fir support for your particulr situation. Please keep letting us know how you are doing (and if you find solutions for clogged cuts - I would benefit from that advice).

There is something I tried today that has greatly loosened up the huge hard mass that remained after pumping for 40+ minutes. I'll post In hopes it can help you or anyone else suffering with ducts that won't empty fully. It involves making a homemade hot compress and using it while pumping. I honestly didn't massage while I used it and was able to empty quite a bit (still not 100% but it helped immensely) here's what I did... Take a small but absorbent hand towel and thoroughly wet it with water, fold it and place it in a ziplock bag opened (I used a quart size ziplock bag) leave the ziplock bag open and make sure the hand towel is really wet and place both in the microwave. Microwave for 1 to 2 minutes (check after a minute for hotness) until it's very hot. CAUTION: It will be very hot! Remove the compress and leaving it open remove all the hot air from it and any water that's pooling in it. Seal the ziplock bag. It's very important that you use a buffer between the compress and your skin, it can be another towel (I'm using a burp cloth/cloth diaper) when putting it to your skin as it will be very hot. I can't stress it enough, do not put it straight to your skin, please. Also move it frequently along the hard areas as you pump. This really helped. I started by actually pressing it on my nipple and holding for a few seconds.

I ordered the 36mm shields from medela, I believe these are the largest they make? I'm currently using the 30 and the picture looks just like the "right size" funnel while pumping but maybe I'm wrong. I will see. It actually just turned like that all of a sudden. Tmi warning... It was actually secreting this really yellow substance yesterday and earlier today, not from the tip where the milk comes from but the sides where it has folded to look like a rose.

Side note I was going to leave but honestly you guys have become my friends as I really don't have anyone close like that where I currently live. Its amazing how having a child can open your eyes to who you truly have. Out of 5 sisters, one who lives outside the continental US, only one, who lives the farthest (Pocono, PA) has actually come to visit Thalia since shes been home. Things happen and this is really hard for everyone.

Thanks again everyone!
