Question for the BTDT Mom's

Are you packing for the hospital/birthcenter/homebirth and if so what are you packing?

It is on my list of things to do, but I have yet to do it. For myself I plan to pack nursing bra, belly binder, comfy clothes to wear in the hospital as well as something to wear home, toiletries (make up, smelly lotion, toothbrush, etc), camera, journal, phone charger, camera charger, and video camera. For baby I plan on packing a onesie or two and one or two outfits as well as a blanket. The hosptial will provide everything else needed for baby. I might possibly pack a couple of Depends for myself as well. I used those with my last baby instead of pads and they were wonderful! I highly recommend them.

**Don't forget to take everything from the hosptial--extra pads, etc because you have paid for them so you might as well!

I haven't thought about packing yet, but I take the minimum. I will pack a couple of nursing tanks or bras, makeup, lotion, chapstick, toothbrush, shampoo /conditioner and an outfit to wear home (already decided it will be my maternity yoga pants and comfy tee shirt. For baby I will pack a couple of coming home outfits and blankets. The hospital provides everything else and I prefer to wear the gown they provide over getting something of mine dirty and coming home with laundry. I might feel differently if I had a bunch of visitors at the hospital, but with my family being far away I will be home by the time they arrive. Also I will take my own pillow, cameras, chargers, etc. DH will be back and forth so if I forget anything he can grab it for me.

I agree with Jenae, take everything with you they provide...pads, diapers, etc. Last time my nurse was awesome and brought me in extras of everything to take home.....it pays to be nice to your nurses:)

I'm going to back my basic bag this weekend, so it's ready - I found a list on Preg. org to use (I love lists and will overpack, but I like to feel comfortable!)

Dont forget boppy, pacifiers if you are using them, we also brought some of the swaddle blankets that have velcro on them and a litlte pouch for their feet (easy to swaddle that way). I stayed in the hospital gown until the time to go home pretty much since i had a c-sec. then only pj pants were comfy enough. The hospital provides gowns/caps, diapers, formula/bottles

ps, i also recommend buying some high waisted underwear for recovery-i just found those more comfy than any other underwear for pads/going over my section site, and you'll be visiting the bathroom quite often. i also bought the buiky pads the hospital used as those worked better for me than the always thin.

I haven't packed yet, but have a list running through my mind constantly. I'm going to pack soon though. I know I'm taking my camera, my cell phone and cord, my lap top and cord, a couple movies, comfy clothes, easy to put on slippers, toiletries, puzzle book or two, pen/pencil, novel to read, change for the candy machine/pop machine (more for when the girls are visting), my housecoat unless it's too hot,. The diaper bag will be packed before I get admitted, and DH will bring that on my last day, along with the car seat. I know I'm taking too much, but I know I'm going to be in the hospital for at least 3 days.

Funny you posted this. My DH told me the other day he had a dream that I went into labor and we didn't have our bags packed. It totally freaked him out! Lol

I will be using this thread to pack my bag!! Smile

I haven't really thought about what I'll be bringing to the birth center. It sounds like most families only spend a few hours there after birth if everything goes well. With my other kids, I always packed very light. About what Janae and Joei have listed. I did always bring change and $1 bills (for vending machines), a deck of cards, and something to read. Even though I had quick births, I liked having those things for the hospital stay after birth. With my last 3, I made birth announcements ahead of time with blanks for the date, time, babys size... to kill time in the hospital, I filled in the blanks, and mailed them off. Smile

I am a minimalist about what to pack. Toiletries, a comfortable outfit for during the day in case visitors come by (I just sleep in the hospital gown), a going home outfit for me and one for baby. I'll also take my Nook. DH is in charge of electronics so he'll pack the camera and Ipad. I don't really know what else he'll have but whatever keeps him entertained. The hospital provides some snacks during labor and postpartum. I like the disposable underwear they provide and snag a couple of extra so I don't have to worry about my own those first few days.

In a pinch you really don't need anything right off. With DS I had to go for my c-section directly from my 36 week appointment so I had nothing until the next morning when DH went home. My parents did go by our house to get my glasses since they made me take out my contacts before surgery. Nothing like seeing a blurry baby for the first time!
