Hi, folks! I just noticed this board! I'm on the September 2004 babies board.
A question.... We're broke, as in flat broke. This is nothing new. I'd really love to make little Walter some clothes, especially as I love folk arts and have inherited a vast array of lovely Guatemalan and so forth fabrics. Even though the mothers at playgroup give Walter lots of clothes (he's smallest, you see) they tend to be very dull brown pants and t-shirts that say "Little Trucker" and stuff like that. Button-down flannel check shirts. Much of it cute, but SO mainstream! One boy even wears a tie and he's not 2 1/2 yet! So I have been dying to make some things. But I had no sewing machine.
Then an old lady down the street moved to sheltered housing and gave me hers but warned me she hasn't used it since the 70's or so. It turned out to be far too dirty and gummed up to use, and after weeks of trying we gave up on getting inside it to have a look and clean it up. Then my neighbor told me she was given one and has no interest in learning to use it and was going to throw it away. She brought it by yesterday. After cleaning it up some and removing the giant wad of sewing thread that had tangled itself about the axle, I now have it working! I'd say it dates from around 1950 or so. It does regular stitching and zig-zag; that's all I need!
Now I have a new dilemma. I cannot find free sewing patterns anywhere. I can't afford to buy a bunch and I don't want to unstitch a lot of his clothes that fit.... Do any of you know where I can get sewing patterns for toddler boys for free? Ideally online?
