First, let me explain that my mom is a Professor of Nursing. She has a PhD in Pediatric Nursing, and was an L&D Nurse for many, many moons. That being said, when it comes to us "kids", she can tend to be somewhat of a prude, if I dare say. I am often being told, "TMI Ariel... TMI!" I, on the other hand, put it all out there! I don't get embarassed easily, and I don't mind sharing personal things during conversation.
So, we were discussing everything baby; from homebirth, to VBAC, to water birth... and that's where it got interesting. I said, "I would love to give birth in the water. You know I have always been a water baby." Mom: "There's just something about it I don't like. I worry that the baby will breath water in, and won't be able to be resuscitated." Me: "I understand your concerns, but you know what the studies say... I'm just not sure I could talk my husband into getting into the water with me. I'm not even sure if I would WANT him in there (laughing)" Mom: "Yeah, I think he might just get too excited." Me: "(Laughing harder) Yeah, well, that too!" Mom: "I didn't mean it like that Ariel. I meant, he may get excited and pop out of the water real quick or something." Me: "Mom, you just need to go ahead and stop!! (I'm dying laughing now)" It was so funny... she didn't even know what to say. I could tell she was so embarassed... but she totally brought that one on herself! Haha!! I love it when I can catch my mom in a pickle. |

Apart from the teasing, baby hasn't started breathing yet, so how is s/he going to breathe in water?

She knows that. She's a medical professional, and she has read the studies and knows the facts. I think it is just her own personal fears for whatever reason. But she does not particularly care for water. I remember when we were little and went to the beach, she rarely got more than ankle-deep into the water. I think it just scares her, and that carries over into her feelings about water-birth.

I get it now! Nothing to do with facts.
