My sister got me connecte to the internet via dial-up (didn't know that still existed!), so just a quick update.
Was admitted to the hospital yesterday with a rupture in my water bag. Good news: Being 32+ weeks along; they've already administered steroids to help develop baby's lungs and magnesium to reduce risk of a stroke in utero or during delivery; no signs of infection; only 1 contraction in 2 days (which I didn't even feel); I'm 2 days into antiobiotic treatment to prevent infection, which is the big risk at this point; every single nurse has commented on how "great" Kennedy looks on the monitor -i.e., she is tolerating the low fluid beautifully so far. Bad news: as of this evening I have had 2 good (well bad) gushes, which makes me very nervous. That said, I was so sick on the magnesium today that I could not get out of bed, so they said it's probably just pooling in the vaginal vault that gushed out when I finally was able to stand up; i.e. not necessarily an increase in the amount I'm leaking. I have another AFI (ultrasound to measure amniontic fluid level) tomorrow. My first was 9.3 on Wed, yesterday was 7.4. Anything about 5 is okay -- not great, but manageable. The neonatologist came by tonight to talk to me about what to expect with a 32-34 weeker. He said the biggest issue is breathing as their lungs are underdeveloped. He also said that we don't like to say this, but girls do better than boys in maturing faster. He said she won't be fed until her breathing is under control. When she is ready to eat, they'll feed her through a tube whatever colustrum, then breastmilk, I can pump. He said ironically the surrivial rate for a 32 weeker is higher than than of fullterm babies because babies with congenital defects often make it to full term, then pass. My sister-in-law Kerry is a labor and delivery nurse here and has been my nurse every shift she's on and she's been fabulous. Assuming I do not fully rupture and go into labor, or develop an infection and go into labor in the next few weeks, they will induce between 35 and 36 week

It is too bad that you are going through this. But now you and Kennedy are being monitored very closely and are getting good care. I hope everything goes well and that you don't get to bored in the hospital.

What a blessing to have (helpful - lol) family nearby during such a rough time! I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers and hope that the next few weeks go by quickly for you.

I know EXACTLY what you are going through! My water broke at 33w3d with DJ. I was put on hospital bed rest with the IV's and steroids and all that jazz.
You are in my prayers and thoughts and if you need to chat or vent or whatever, pm me or I can send you my phone number or email address. ![]() I know it's scary...you sound like you're in good hands though. |
