Question TTC after being on Lacmital

    Hi Ladies

Has anyone had any experience with Lamictal and TTCing?

I currently on Lamictal but will be going off it before we TTC. I want to go off it in October and I'm assuming I will need to taper off (I will be discussing this with my psychiatrist). DH thinks we will need to wait 3 months after totally stopping the meds before it will be safe to TTC. My psychiatrist, however, said the medication will be out of my system within in a month of the last dose, but he also admitted that he doesn't know much about the medication and pregnancy.

Who would be the best professional-type person to talk to about this kind of thing?
    Thanks in advance
    ~Roxi~

I'd talk to an OB. Its listed as category C - which basically means there is little or no research on its safety for use during pregnancy in humans. The OB will probably just tell you to wait to TTC until its cleared from your system.

You can see what the FDA has to say about it here:

    Good luck!

Thanks, Erin. That info is much the same as what I've read before. I did a bit more research and it looks like it shouldn't take more than a month to get it all out of my system. I do still need to see an OB to make sure everything is working ok, tho

Do you (or anyone else) know anything about how medication can affect the sperm?

Medication your DH is taking? I doubt there's very much information out there on that specifically. If the medication is a known mutagen or teratogen, I'd avoid it.

I'm not sure if his medication is either of those things, but he's taking Ambien and Lexapro....

Pharmacists are a great resource for these questions.

Thanks, James87. I ended up deciding to stay on it. I got down to 125mg (which is where I am now) and it took me almost 5 weeks to feel stable on so I'm thinking that's my threshhold. I can now see a difference in how I cope when I'm feeling "off" and I realised it would be more dangerous for the baby if I stopped the meds all together.

I've been taking 4mg of folic acid (as per the GYN) since Nov'11 so I should be covered there.

I'm really glad to hear that you could BF.
