I use one strand of matching yarn always! There is a smart way of sewing pieces together - and it is very easy - but hard to describe. I really suggest asking a knit shop person to give you a quick lesson because it makes ALL the difference in how smart your knitting looks!
Blocking: Once I've sewn the pieces together and woven in all the ends, I use upholstery pins and pin the garment exactly the way I want it to look onto my ironing board. I cover the whole thing with a very damp towel (almost wet) until everything is dry. (2-3 days) [I seldom iron, so that's no problem!]
Hope that helps! Just ask if anything isn't clear.
Thanks! I will try at the "fancy" yarn store around here. I haven't actually been in it yet, but my mom tells me it's a "hang on to your wallet" kind of store I always have bought at Michaels or WM. Just the hats so far, and the mittens, have required sewing, and those crocheted ones just get crocheted together.
I did use 1 strand of wool, and kept looping it over and through(have NO idea what that kind of stitch is called).
I am quite proud of the mittens that I made,(I read a pattern-yay!) and feel ready to tackle something a little harder, it's just a matter of finding something I like. Maybe a sweater for Sierra? lol.
