Anyone knit soakers or longies (cloth diapering)?

Hi,

We cloth diaper DS. We're working on potty training, but not yet. He's leaking out of his diapers, probably due to fit. Instead of getting new diapers, I'd like to knit him some soakers (actually shorts).

Does anyone knit them? What pattern do you use? What's your favorite yarn to use? We're also planning on another baby, so I'd like to work on soakers for a tiny baby too.

I know Elizabeth (gorlitsa) does! She's shown us some cute ones she's done up...and even started up a website shop I think!

I remember she said she improvises...doesn't follow a specific pattern all the way through...but I"m sure she'd be a wealth of information.

There is a craft section on http://www.diaperswappers.com where a lot of ladies are into making the shorties/longies Smile

My first baby is due this month and I have knit up some wool soakers in newborn size. I found the pattern online and it is really easy (I am still a pretty novice knitter). I like it too, because it is knit in the round and there is no seaming needed (although you do graft one small section).

The pattern I found is here: http://community.livejournal.com/punk_knitters/110889.html

Here's a pic of the ones I knit. I still need to finished up cuffs on several.

That looks great. When you LO is born, I'd love to see a picture of it on. I've been hesitant to make that one because it looks like the legs come out of the wrong place!

The legs do look like they could be placed wrong. But if you go to the pattern link and scroll way down you can see pictures people have sent the pattern maker of their kids (all ages) in the soaker and it seems to fit fine. Very strange! Smile

I ordered a pattern off of turtleknits. I also had a free pattern from tinybird and I kinda vamped it in to a soaker and a pair of longies and they turned out pretty good!

In the beginning I used mendhi mama by fern and faerie and the jennies soaker pattern. Both free. Once I felt comfortable I started just working out my own soakers w/o a pattern to fit my kids.

I've used wool. Sometimes you can find it real cheap. Most times it's about 5 bucks a skein. When I find it cheap I stock pile it. hehehe.

Gee i dont have the pattern anymore but got it and the wool over in europe. The wool was the kind that still had the lanolin still in it so was real nice to knit gave your hands the spa treatment at the same time. The pattern was from the waldorf school there.
