Dishcloth/washcloth Exchange?

Dishrag Tag is slow, so I thought I'd put out feelers to see who would be interested in a swap.

Here's an example of how it would work.

  • 10 people sign up.
  • Swap host PMs those people to give them her address.
  • Participants make 10 cloths, knit or crochet, in whatever 100% cotton brand/colors they like.
  • Participants mail their 10 completed cloths, along with some money to help cover postage to the final destination and their address, to the swap host.
  • Swap host takes one cloth from each of the received groups and creates a new set of groups, then mails them to each participant.
  • Participant receives package containing 10 cloths, one from each participant.

I would think there should be a deadline so that we're not waiting months for our cloths, but it would depend on how many people sign up and how long it takes each person to make one cloth.

What do you guys think?

well I know I haven't participated a ton on this board, but I'd like to try it out! I'd love to have some unique dishcloths, if others don't mine being painfully simple.

I'd be interested in participating. I've been doing a weekly knit along for cloths and have a *small* stash. Wink

Some are even nice enough to use in an exchange -- some are more part of a learning curve. lol

So if this takes off, count me in.

I'd love to host this. Biggrin thanks for getting this started, Brandy-

We could take as many as want to participate, just have more than one group if there's more than 10 people. I'm thinking 10 would be enough to make at once.

I'll also knit up a few extra so if someone doesn't come through in the end, we can all get an assortment. Biggrin

If you already have a cone of yarn you know you'd like to use to do that, would you post the color? that way we can try to get different colors. I know Michaels and W-Mart are both carrying cone cotton.

I have lots of cones in different colors- so I'll choose based on what other people pick to use add a different color. Smile or if you have an assortment (jules) that's okay too.

simple can still be very pretty- if you need patterns, we can help you find some nice ones that are free on the web to try out.

I picked up a one pound cone of Peaches & Cream, Spring Meadows, today. I estimate I can get 8 or 9 cloths out of that. 10 if I'm lucky. Biggrin

uh oh... I got a 12oz skein, thinking it should surely be enough.. now I'm wondering.. I can always go back & get another skein. We'll see! Biggrin
Mine is mostly light yellow & a faded rose color, then a little light green here & there. I couldn't get a good pic of it unless it was in the sun, so here you go:

I will probobly do a couple white ones. I havnt gone to the store yet, but I'll have to update on other colors I choose. Maybe beige and yellows. I'll probobly stick with neutrals because thats what I like.

Another option would be to start a second round of disrags going that way we'd have more of them zipping around. I know i'd be willing to do it more than once, I bet many other's would as well!

you could do another dishrag tag if you wanted- but the intention of this is a swap-so you make x# and you get x# back- one or two from each person, depending on how many we have that participate.

mommyof1.5 is your yarn 100% cotton? we should have added that in there- for the dishcloths- they should be 100% cotton yarn, not acrylic. The color is fine, if the fiber is correct. I think I am getting about 3 dishcloths, depending on the pattern, from 2 little skeins of yarn. I'll go weigh one and figure it out.

We should also have a minimum size, to be fair to all- 8x8 or bigger? I think most of mine are bigger. Is that too small? Jules- what size are your dishcloths? I was looking to see what Kim had set has a minimum size on the dishrag tag, but I don't see it.

so far we have
1) Wren
2) mommyof1.5
3) Jules,
4) DaLLas'mommy
5) Me

even if that's all we have- we can make that work-
where each person sends in 8 dishcloths and gets 8 back.
If you have a big cone, like Brandy, and want to make all the yarn out of the same color, then just make 2 different patterns of cloths- otherwise send in 4 of one color- and 4 of another? I'll swap it out and try to make sure no one gets their own back- even though it's a little more work to swap it that way, seeing as these are so big and heavy.

Bumping to see if there's any more interest.

I'll clean out my PM box soon, so we have room to trade info.

How about we wait til Monday, and then get the swap started? It will take some time to make the dishcloths for the swap- how long does everyone want? 2 weeks? longer?

yep mine is 100% cotton Biggrin
I also can get started as soon as I know a size. Whatever timing works best for everyone else I am sure will work for me. Biggrin

Most that I do are 9 x 9 give or take part of an inch. How about we set a minimum size of 8 x 8?

I have a variety of colors and could "custom make" to the colors you'd like to have. Or I can make whatever I like and you can be stuck with that. Biggrin Just let me know. Beige and earthtones I have...can make a couple of those for you.

I thought I had posted this, but I guess it just sat here for a while.

for example- I can't keep up with Jules pace Wink she just makes so much more than I do, and lots faster. I know some people can make these in an hour. It takes me about 2 days to make one, because I'm not constantly doing it. (that's when I'm really working at it). We could say shoot for 2 weeks and then have everyone give a check-in. 2 weeks to knit and 5 days to mail time, so they'd be to me in 3 weeks?

I was thinking let's go with 9x9 for the size (eta- ish- so if they turn out 8 1/2, it's not going to be a biggie, just not 7 1/2), bigger is okay with me, I like to grab a good one to hold onto. The ones I buy at the store are all 11x11 ish.

I can help with some sites for knitted cloth patterns, if you need patterns, just let me know. I've done some using very simple stitches that turn out very pretty. I have a couple of crocheted patterns bookmarked too if you don't knit.

I was thinking about the time frame again. What if we said we'll make 2 a week, so 4 weeks to make 8, and then a week for mailing?

I don't want to have anyone worry about trying to rush to get them done, feel the pressure for it. If you get them done early, fine, feel free to send them on ahead. Does that sound like a better plan?

We'll still be way ahead of the game, even if it takes us a month- or even two.

Feel free to get started kntting (or crocheting) or let me know if you need help with finding patterns.

Later this week I'll get a posting going. I'm swamped for time until Thursday, then I'll have more free time on my hand.

Wren, good idea, Bonita, nice of you to organize it! Just as an update with the Dishrag Tag, it is still going on, but it is slow. I have been in contact with the most recent recipient and things will be moving along soon!

That's fine- I'll get a final list together this weekend of how many people and how many dish cloths to make. Smile I'll max it at 10 per person, unless anybody wants to make more Wink

If anyone who's already in it, wants to max at 8, that's okay too JLMK.

That will also give me time to clear out my in box. Smile
