I think that it might in come companies be the same thing, but I agree with you, varigated would have shorter repeats so it wouldn't end up striping.
But yarn that pools could either be varigated or self striping, it depends on what you make out of it, and where the colorsl line up.
Usually variageted has short color changes, while self-striping has longer changes.

Yeah, Nathalie's socks 'pooled' a little, you can tell in the pics i posted. Those longies are cute! I actually like the way the colors came out!

Yeah, Janel's right. If you knit something small enough or large enough, self striping can look like varigated and vice versa. I've only seen self-striping yarn in sock yarn. Oh, but there's also Noro and Paton's Soy Wool, too.
