I just started knitting. My favorite yarn is Cascade 220. It's 100% wool, so it felts. It's even and springy enough to be forgiving of my mistakes, and it comes in lots of great colors.

Best of all, it's relatively inexpensive.

I dont' think i could pick just one, but i LOVE what I am working with right now!

I am making a baby sweater with Kathmandu Aran Tweed and I LOVE it! I love the way it feels...and how chunky an aran weight yarn is. This particular one is something like 85% Merino, 10% Silk and 5% Cashmere and its so soft (nubbly, but not scratchy at all). The helper at my LYS also showed me a scarf that was felted from the stuff (I didn't know it would felt since it was a blend!) and it was AMAZING!

Price wise, its not a cheap yarn admittedly...but its not outrageious either. You can get it for between 6 and 8 dollars a skein...i needed 3 skeins so this sweater will have cost 18 dollars, with yarn leftover.

A few years (yes, years!) ago my LYS stopped carrying a pure silk yarn, so I bought two skeins at half price. It's like heaven to work with. So far all I've made is a little ipod pouch for a friend, but it was SO soft and nice, and made a good substantial fabric!
