If your house was on fire, and you could only grab three things before you leave, what would they be? ("Things" only. It is assumed all your family members/pets are already safe.)

For me I think it would be at least one family photo album, important documents, and my purse. Of course, right now I would have to only choose one important document, since they aren't all in one place. I need to do that, like file them all in a 3-ring binder so it would be easy to grab in an emergency.

We have all of our vital documents in one folder, so I would grab that.

Secondly, I would grab the camera that my dad bought in Singapore when he was in the Vietnam war. It's a beautiful camera with all the original booklets and extra lenses. But honestly, I feel like my childhood is wrapped around it. I remember trying to take pictures with it when I was a little girl.

Lastly, I would grab my laptop. I have so many pictures and documents on here. I've moved my documents to a cloud but not my pictures yet.

Hubby and I already talked about this many many times.

He would grab all the safes and all the external hard drives and his briefcase. This would cover just about all of our important documents, Hubby's massive coin collection, extra cards, cash and irreplaceable old pictures. Most of our pics are digital copies which are on external hard drives and we also have a backup of everything on Hubby's servers at a co-location.

I would be in charge of grabbing our pup and my jewelry box. Though, my jewelry is insured so it wouldn't be the end of the world if it got left behind. Also, the safes are all fireproof and most of the contents are insured as well so again not the end of the world.

I guess we would be okay as long as we had each other and our pup. I mean, everything is insured and they are just things. I don't know what I would do without my Hubby or my pup. Sad

ETA - Omgosh....I just got all teary and am having a mini panic attack. I don't know why I'm getting so emotional thinking about this hypothetical fire! Jeez....

We really need to get everything arranged better
I guess I might grab my kitten too.. even though shes a pain in the rear Smile

Having lived through a house fire I can tell you that in that moment you do not have the presence of mind to know what to get or not get. Your only concern is getting everyone out safely.

This being a hypothetical situation though, I will say I would get my purse (re getting all of your ID is a pain), our safe, and any pictures that I could.

Thought I would start hanging around here a bit now that we're getting back to TTC!

I have a feeling I'd probably not worry about much except DH and the dog. But theoretically I'd grab my laptop, my purse, and DH's parent's pictures from his nightstand (they are gone a long time now, and he has almost no pics.)

I'm sure that in a real fire I'd just be concerned about the kids and cats, but if I were somehow in an incredibly clear state of mind and all kids and critters made it out of the house, I'd grab the external hard drive, it has all my pics on it, maybe our documents, although I think that would be something DH would think of before I would, and my purse, it has all my cards and I keep a back-up inhaler in there which I'd probably need after a fire. I would also try to grab a few of the boys favorite toys/blankets, just because if we were to lose everything I think it would be comforting to them to have at least one thing that is theirs while everything else around us is unfamiliar.

I know, I can't imagine thinking of anything except getting all family (and cat) out safely, either, but it's a thought-provoking question, anyway.

It made me realize that I need to get all my important documents into one place that would be easy to grab, which might not matter in a fire, but would be good if we were ever given an evacuation order or something else where we had a little more time. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to have an emergency bag packed for each family member and keep it in the van (with a change of clothes, non-perishable food, water, etc., for a couple of days.)

FYI - A fire proof safe is only fireproof to a certain degree. Our house burnt down when I was 12 years old. Within one hour the roof was in the basement. The fire was so hot and burnt for so long, the fireproof safe burnt as well.

Inhaler, cell phone and mac. Ideally. Then I'd have to come back in to get my book of coupons. Wink
