I know some of you are already aware of my trip to L&D last night. I didn't post this on FB, but I was actually at the hospital on Saturday morning as well. I was having irregular menstrual like cramps that started around 7am. We decided to go up to the hospital around 10:30 to check things out. I was not dilated any but I was having contractions show up on the monitor. The doctor ordered a shot of terbutaline and that stopped them. They sent me home and told me to come back if I had 5 or more in an hour. I started having some contractions again in the early part of the evening but very irregular. I would have a few in a row and then things would get quiet for a bit. That continued through the night and through Sunday. Sunday night things picked up enough that I decided to go back. I left Jason at home because Jordan was in bed. It was around 10:30 and I didn't want to drag people out of bed to come stay with her. They picked up in frequency and once they got me hooked up, I was having them anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes apart. My cervix was not dilated (I HATE HATE HATE getting checked. It hurts, especially when your cervix is still posterior.) I was definitely having too many contractions though so the doctor ordered a shot of terbutaline again. I really wanted to refuse it. It's a temporary fix and I hate having things unnecessarily injected into my body (and Nora's). However, I really felt like I should at least try to get things stopped and my doctor wouldn't have been available to me for at least 8 hours from that time. After discussing things with the doctor on call, I agreed to the shot. It slowed them down to about one an hour and they sent me home.
So... I went to be about 2am but woke up about once an hour or so with a contraction and to go to the bathroom. At 6am I had a pretty strong one that woke me up and was one of the most painful ones yet. I went to the bathroom and felt something strange. I knew what was coming, even though I didn't have this happen with Jordan. I looked and sure enough, some or all of my mucus plug came out.
I feel like they are picking up in frequency again. I'm about to shower so that I can be ready to go to the hospital or to my doctor's office. I don't think they will try to stop labor at this point and since I'm a repeat c/s, I really don't know what the plan will be. All I know is that it doesn't look like my uterus is going to let Nora stay in there much longer. That is really hard on me. I'm feeling a lot of sadness and guilt that my body is going to force her to be here sooner than she should be. I'm just glad that I'm 34 weeks now and not any less. That is definitely something to be grateful for.
Oh Kayla! I'm sending lots of prayer's your way that things suddenly get better and that she bakes a little longer. I can't imagine what you're going through right now.
Don't give up hope just yet, Kayla. See what they say today. We frequently stop labor on 34 weekers. Without cervial changes and if Nora is tolerating the contrations well they may just watch and wait. There is still a lot the can do besides Terb. It very well may be bedrest from here on out. Possibly even hospital bedrest. Even the mucus plug coming out is not a strong indication that delivery is imminent. Hang in there!
34 weekers have an excellent prognosis. If Nora is born soon, you can expect her NICU stay to be anywhere from a few days, to 4-5 weeks. She may need some breathing assistane in the form of Oxygen, generally through a nasal cannula. She will most likely be a feeder/grower. Meaning she is not medically ill, but she just needs to learn to eat and to pack on some weight. If they think that delivery will happen in the next few days they generally have the NNP from NICU come and talk to you and answer any questions.
If you have any questions or just want to talk, feel free to text me. I know it's scary. Keep off your feet, lay on your left side, drink water like crazy and keep us updated!
I just saw your post on facebook... I wish this was a topic I could give advice for.... all I can offer are words of encouragement. Hang in there and know that you are doing an amazing job for Nora. Please don't feel guilt or any sense of failure. I'll be praying for you and little Nora.
Mommy to 2 amazing little boys!
Angel babies 6/9/07 & 11/16/07
Thinking of you and Nora, Kayla! Hang in there. Wish I knew what else to say. Amber gave some great advice.
Oh Kayla, this really blows. I am so glad that you're as far along as you are. Hopefully they'll put you on hospital bed rest (it's so much more effective than home bed rest, and much cheaper than NICU days). Can your mom come and care for Jordan? I hope you get at least another two weeks.
Thinking of you, Kayla. Hope you are in bed resting. Give us an update when you can.
I am now on bed rest at home and taking Procardia. I had a transvaginal sonogram at my Peri's office today and my cervix has definitely shortened quite a bit since last time. Of course shortening is normal but my doctor thought it was a more significant amount than the norm. They monitored me for 20 minutes and I had, I believe, 3 contractions. They are still varying in intensity, length and come at irregular intervals. She said Nora was looking fine through it all so the focus is really just trying to keep things calm for as long as possible. I'll be on the Procardia for a week or two, if my body holds out that long.
Amber, thank you for that information. Between the hospital visit, my OB, and Peri, no one really gave me any details of a 34 week baby. I appreciate you giving me an idea of what to expect, just in case it does happen sooner rather than later.
To answer your question Joy, my mom would be here but she has a very bad cold. So, Kim (my oldest sister) is taking tomorrow off to be with me, Wednesday my friend Kathy is taking the day off, and Thursday Kelly (my other sister) will hopefully be with me. Her daughter has a cold too so hopefully she is better by then. This is Jason's off Friday but he does have a doctor's appointment so we are still trying to figure out something for that day. My mom will hopefully be well enough to be with me next week.
I think that's it? Oh, yes, our realtor came to our house Saturday just before we went to the hospital. We already had the appointment set up to sign papers for an offer on a house.
kayla, hope things are feeling better today and that nora bakes a little longer. you are strong and smart and i'm so proud of you and all that you done with both girls!! chin up momma and enjoy a little pampering before it gets tedious!
