RQOTD - Wednesday

Have you ever had a garage sale? I know we've talked about what we do w/children's outgrown clothes, but what do you do with other "junk" you no longer need? Do you like to go to garage sales?

No, I have never had a garage sale. We try to donate as much of our stuff as possible. There are so many people that need things more than we do, so I try to give to people where I can. Right now, we have a ton of things to donate, but have not had the time to get it over to Goodwill. I hope to do it soon.

I also do not really like to go to garage sales. I have bought a few things, but to drive around hitting garage sales to find things just is not my cup of tea. Biggrin

We have had several but have come to realize its more hassle than it's worth. I hate everyone wanting stuff for free and the set up and tear down and the early morning start. So now we just load up my car and take it all to a new goodwill that opened up next to our house.

Ditto all of this. I don't let clutter collect in the house. If we don't have a spot or a use for it, it goes bye-bye. Our house is small, so I have to be sure I stay on top of the clutter to keep it under control.

With sell larger items, like furniture on Craigslist. If we want to get rid of something fast and have no one to give or donate it to, we just put it on the curb with a free sign on it and it's generally gone that day. I feel better about that, since it's not ending up in a landfill somewhere by just tossing it in the trash.

I've never boughten anything from a garage sale either. I know people find some great things, but I feel like I'm just sifting through someone elses junk.

It's 1800 sq ft. It was built in the 70's so it's not very open. I really like our house and it's plenty of space, excpecially since it's just the 3 of us 95% of the time. But All of our friends have 3500+ houses, so ours feels itty bitty in comparison. I feel like I just have to be smart about scale of the furniture and not allow any unused items to just hang around or it gets cluttered really quickly.

We've only participated in two garage sales in our 9 years of marriage. One was probably 7 years ago and we combined our stuff with my sisters and a neighbor. The second one was just a couple of months ago. It was a benefit garage sale and we combined our stuff with a lot of family and some friends. Instead of garage sales, we usually sell big items on Craigslist and then donate smaller things to Goodwill.

I'm not big on going to garage sales. It really has more to do with the fact that I do not want to get up at the crack of dawn to sift through peoples things in the hopes that I might find something I can use. I'm lazy like that.

That's HUGE!!! Our house is 1800 sq. feet too and it only feels small in terms of storage. Well, with three people it does not feel small. Our next house might be slightly bigger if we end up in a four bedroom but we will see what happens.

Ours is 1900 and like Kayla, if I had more storage it would be fine but we are maxed out everywhere. We have plenty of room for the four of us we just need a storage unit now, lol.

Never have had a garage sale. I will go to garage sales if there's a big organized one for a community, so that I can walk from house to house. I'm not big on driving every where to rummage through junk in hopes of finding one gem.
Big ticket items (like furniture) we sell - usually through word of mouth or though an online place that's like craigslist only for military. Everything else we give away to people we know who could use it or donate.

We're currently in a 700 sq ft apartment. Our last base house was the biggest house that we've ever been in and it had 1,400 sq ft. I hate useless junk hanging around and purge stuff every time we move.

I have been so stressed out lately over the amount of things we have in storage!!! Bins upon bins of clothes the kids have outgrown, boxes of toys packed away, etc etc etc. I can't have a garage sale because we're way too far out nobody would come to it. I do donate some clothes that I don't care to keep, or household things. I have been trying to tackle the bins of Miles' outgrown clothes and have been doing pretty good. But still have probably 2 bins with random sizes in it that need to go. In our area, facebook "garage sales" are really popular. There's one for all of our surrounding towns, so I'm a member of 2 of those. One of them has over 1200 members - you post something and it sells almost right away! I have been selling (and buying) a few things on there. We have roughly 2900 square feet. I would love to have a smaller house so I can't keep all this extra crap!!!

I've never had a garage sale of my own. I prefer to donate and get take the tax deduction. Much less hassle.

I do like to shop at garage sales, though. Ever since having kids, I've made multiple purchases from people in my neighborhood because of their garage sales.... I've bought quite a few kids books, a sand table, a train table, sand toys for the beach, among other things..... I love finding deals for kid stuff that I would likely buy anyways in the store. I think my most expensive purchase was the train table, which was $30. I bought the kids an outdoor basketball hoop for a couple bucks, I'll spend 10-25 cents on a kids book and not much more money for other items...

Our community has a garage sale every year. We have participated a few times and I generally keep a box or two in the basement for garage sale stuff. I am currently keeping all our clothes (thank goodness for the attic) as my sister is ttc. I donate a lot of kid toys.

I do love garage saling and have gotten a lot of kid stuff that way and we've pretty much furnished (hard stuff) our house from garage sales. I love refinishing furiture. My sister and her husband are avid garage salers and have made thousands of dollars selling what they buy on ebay.
