Calling all pet owners!

I JUST FOUND A FLEA ON MY DOG!!! I'm freaking out. Mind you she gets a dose every month of flea and tick!!!

So I went to the store and bought her frontline plus and a shampoo. I bathed her in the shampoo and now I'm reading that I can't put on the frontline!! WTF? I have to wait at least 2 days for her natural oils to come back.

If you know me,you know that I'm traumatized from a prior flea infestation that took nearly 3 months to control and we didn't even own a dog or cat at the time!!!

So, should I just wait the 2 days. I'm hoping this is just an isolated incident but I doubt it. I've been letting her out onto the deck I wonder if she got it there. HELP!!! I'm a new dog owner!!!

I would call your vet first and ask them. The flea stuff (even the shampoos) they sell in pet stores isn't regulated and can be toxic! Your vet can advise you the best way to handle the situation asap to avoid an infestation.

I (luckily) have never had to deal with that but I hear it can be hell. Here's hoping it was just one and not more!

I agree with Rachael..ask first...just in case.
Can you get flea collars for dogs over there?...maybe that can help in the meantime.
We've been very lucky with our cat and dog.

Had a cat when I was 19 with a bf and she infested the flat...I wonder if he still has problems..?

I haven't called but I was able to get a pretty good check of the area where I found it and there's no sign of them. I got a quick look at the rest of the body and nothing. She's not itchy or seems uncomfortable which is why I was amazed when I saw it.

I will start the frontline plus tomorrow. It has very good reviews so I'm hopeful. I think I am going to return the collar, there is not good stuff online about them. Supposively they have too many chemicals, and anyway the frontline is supposed to be sufficient. She has an appt sometime next week so I will talk to the vet about it.

Frontline is great! Throw the collar away, they're more harm than good.
If you're interested, you can give your little doggy, Brewer's Yeast. It's a vitamin. It's good for a healthy shiny coat, helps with shedding but it also helps with fleas, as it contains garlic and fleas don't like it. Wink

Thanks!! I will look into it!

I put the frontline this morning and she seems fine. Like usual she is bothered by it and has attempted to scratch at it a couple of times. I'm really really hoping this was nothing!

Oh, there's another thing you can do as well. We have a tea tree oil spray that is great for dogs as well, again, fleas HATE it!! I spray the dogs with the oil and brush them. I also use it on the fabrics around the house, especially the rugs. It's got a minty smell to it though, but it's not too strong.
