First RE Visit
DH & I will have our first visit with an RE a week from tomorrow. I am VERY nervous about our first visit. Can anyone tell me what to expect during this visit other than the obvious, going over health history, etc? Do they do a physical exam? And if so, is this like a physical or just exam of reproductive areas (DH is very nervous about this)? I had a pap smear just three weeks ago, but will they do another? DH is going tomorrow for an SA.
I'm driving myself crazy with all the unknowns! :bonkself:
Not sure if its the same over here...but on my first visit...it was going over history and scheduling an HSG for me and SA for DF.
I really hope it goes well for you. :)
At my first appointment we talked about health history and they did a panel of bloodwork on both my husband and myself. They scheduled a semen analysis for my husband and an ultrasound for me to look at my uterus and ovaries, as well as the hsg dye test. I've never had a RE do a pap or physical exam of any sort on me. All the best at your appointment next week!!
Mine was the same. I had just had bloodwork done, my hubby had his analysis already. So we just talked and scheduled further things. I was surprised he didn't do an exam as the first thing, but I guess it was because I had been to my doctor twice the month before and had blood work and a pap smear. And I got clomid and provera to try. I brought my charts for him to look through.
At our first RE appt, we'd already had all of our bloodwork and my HSG and DH's SA done, so we were just going over results and discussing our next course of action. Lots of information provided on our next steps (for us with unexplained, it was Clomid plus IUI) and what all that would entail, physically and financially.
I hope that your appointment goes well!!! KUP and let us know how it went! :)
edit to add: Part of my fertility workup included a physical and pap smear prior to meeting with our RE.. we'd switched insurance and long story short, most of our testing was with a different doctor (a nurse practitioner actually) before we got to see the actual RE.
And unless your DH's SA has some pretty abnormal results, I really don't think he will be receiving any sort of physical exam... and even if he does have abnormal test results, they will likely discuss those with you and talk to you about if he would even need to be examined further...
I know it can be such a huge violation of privacy to go down this infertility doctor road, but from our experience and those I've heard from, there shouldn't be anything like sudden and unexpected physicals for your hubby.. :)
Thank you so much for your responses! You've definitely helped put us at ease. We are dealing with MFI, and DH had a horrible experience with a Urologist at the beginning of our infertility journey... and because of that, it's taken us this long to revisit treatment again... He's had 4 SAs in the past, and has to have another one prior to this RE appt on Thursday, so I am worried about adding any more stress on him. We're just a little gun-shy. ;)
It sounds like, from what we discussed with my OBGYN, IVF is the way for us to go... DHs numbers are too low to try IUI... And, amazingly enough, I will be on CD3-5 at the time of our visit... so we're hoping that we won't have to waste much time getting to work!
I will keep everyone posted, of course!
Wishing you all the best at your appointment!
