Look for advice and shared experiences

Hello,

I am not new on here but I have just not posted in a LONG time. My DH and I are trying to conceive a 2nd child and after more then two years of trying we are finally seeking help. It took 7 years to get DS and I didn't want to take that long again. We are just about finished our investigative cycle with the fertility specialist and it looks like (we have not had our official meeting yet) my estrogen is on the low side..and my DH has morphology and motility issues. They levels are not horrible but they are also on the lower end. I am from Kitchener Ontario and I am seeking help from the KARMA clinic here in Kitchener......I am looking to see if any one else on here is also using the same clinic or if there is anyone else from Ontario who is going through similar experiences. I want to be able to talk about experiences and costs...what's covered and what is not.

Thanks in advance for the help

Hi!
I'm not currently going through similar experiences - but have been through just about everything with an amazing RE in Toronto.
I can possibly help with questions on costs etc. and am always willing to discuss my experiences, especially if I can help someone else going through long TTC

Thanks for wanting to talk about this with me Audrey. I am excited to be on this journey, excited because there is something wrong and it can be treated. I was worried that everything would come back normal and they would not be able to help me.

I don't know for sure yet what my course of treatment will be but I am thinking that an IUI will be in my future and that's what I am more curious about the cost and what is covered. I have been getting conflicting answers online and the sheets that my Dr's office has supplied isn't very clear.

Did you use any hormones or ovary stimulating drugs??
What were they??
How many cycles of your treatment did it take to conceive your children??

I am open to talking over private message if that is more comfortable for you when discussing money. You said you used a clinic in Toronto where are you from??

Sorry for all the questions.....:)

I am not Audrey but I figured I would answer you questions as well. I am in Edmonton so things are a little different but I will give you the information for out here so you can see the differences.
I used hormones, I was on puregon. Unfortunately I became severely allergic to it my first cycle. As there was a similar chance with any other meds we gave up. I conceived without assistance the first time and the second time was after an HSG. We were lucky that my meds were 100% covered by our drug plans as they were about $1000 for the cycle we did. All testing (u/s every few days, blood work, etc) is covered as normal. For IUI it was going to cost us $250 at transfer. For IVF it is about $10,000.

If Rachael sees this she is pregnant with an IUI and she is in Ontario and can also give you amounts.

Good luck.

I just finished my investigative cycle that was covered under OHIP except for the initial consult fee that was $125.00. I know the drugs will be partially covered as DH plan will cover it...I think it's 60%. Now if I have any other B/W or U/S leading up to an IUI...is that covered. The IUI cost does that include the sperm wash....?? Is the B/W and U/S leading up to the IUI the same as the investigative cycle...B/W and U/S every morning from day 9 until I O???

Hi there. Got your PM!

I'll try and answer best I can.

In Ontario, the actual procedure of IUI is covered by OHIP. The part you pay for (I've seen anywhere from $350 to $700 between different clinics) is the sperm washing.

All blood work and ultrasound are covered by OHIP.

For meds, it depends. I've been on clomid and femera which are both very cheap (with drug plan under $50 I think) and they are low end ovary stimulation drugs. Most docs will start out with one of those to see how your body responds. My body only liked one round of Clomid then stopped responding to it so I moved to injectibles. For injectibles, it's almost $1 per ml, so for a 900ml dosage pen of say..Puregon, it was about $900.

I also had two LAP surgeries, as it turns out that the third RE we saw told us I had a uterine septum. Once it was removed and we did our 5th IUI but 1st with that RE/Clinic (combo of injectibles and femera with IUI) that it worked. Smile

My drug plan paid 80% of the drugs but I'm lucky as most drug plans in Ontario don't cover any fertility meds at all. It's very rare. What I suggest is checking online (if you can for your plan) or calling your drug plan and asking for a list of meds that are covered first. DON'T ask for a list of fertility meds, just all meds (as some, like femera, it's actually a fertility med). The reason being is that if the doc prescribes you something like femera, you may be able to get it covered under a regular med but not as a fertility med (does that make sense)? Also, if you have a list in hand of meds that are covered, your doc can see if one brand/type is covered on your plan and another isn't and prescribe you one that you can get money back for.

Ummm...I think that's what you were looking for? If you have any more questions, I will try to answer.

I think the charge out here is for sperm washing as well.

I am not from Toronto, but also wanted to wish you luck. I know how frustrating and slow the process can be. T&P!

DH and I had our follow up appointment with the fertility specialist. There weren't really any surprises.

I have low estrogen and progesterone as a result I have low egg quality. DH has poor motility and mobility.

Also I found out last week that DH and I both have europlasma (SP) it's transmitted sexually which is how we both have it. Its a disease that causes early miscarriages and premature labor. So we are both on an antibiotic to get rid of it. So once we are done the antibiotic I have to go back in and get another culture done to make sure its gone.

In the mean time DH has to give another sample and they are going to do a swim up test so test the swimming ability of the good sperm before we progress to the IUI. If the swim up test has good results then on CD 1 in January I will start my IUI cycle!!

If the swim test yields bad sperm then we are done. Unfortunately IVF financially isn't for us.

I also received the costs of everything.
The swim up test is $200.00 which is a one time test
The monitoring by ultra sound and blood work and a few other minor clinical admins stuff is $475.00 a cycle
Sperm wash regardless of how many in a cycle is $300.00
I am almost certain that the medication will be covered by DH drug plan.
