I'm out for this month + temping question

Welp, AF showed her ugly face in the wee hours of the morning. So, I'm out this cycle, but I'm at peace with it right now. however, I would really like to chart my temps and it is not something I had much luck with this last cycle and I ended up just quitting about two weeks in. Does anyone have some tips? My biggest problem is some nights we sleep with the fan on, or the window open, or both, some nights neither...I even tried temping vaginally, but I must not have been consistent with my technique, because it was all over the place.

How all over the place? It can sometimes look like its all over the place but really only varies a couple of tenths of a degree. You want to be as consistent as possible whether you temp vaginally or orally. So try to temp as close to the same time every day as possible and move as little as possible before temping. You want at least 3 hours of solid sleep before temping for max accuracy. I would think the fan and window stuff would have no or almost no impact on your internal body temp, but I could be wrong about that. Sorry AF showed her ugly face.

What Anna said. I know some people say they like to sleep in on weekends and stuff but I always set an alarm for the same time each day just to temp. I roll over turn the alarm of and temp. My thermometer stores that temp until next use as well so if by some miracle I can sleep longer i just grab the temp from the thermometer when I wake up.

I was getting to bed pretty consistently between 12-2am, and then waking every single day at 7. I keep my BBT on the nightstand, so I don't have to move really at all. Orally I was getting similar temps for the first few days, and then we slept with the fan on and it dropped by about half a degree (97.26, down to 96.68), so since it was still early in the cycle I decided to try vaginal temping because I thought it might be more consistent. Four days later I had gotten one as low as being in the 95s, and one in the 98s...So, I'm thinking maybe just do it orally and if we sleep with the fan on, I might have to discard that temp or at least make a note in case it throws everything off. I guess I just need to be more patient. That's not my strong suit, lol.

Thanks Anna. Smile

Thanks Wendy. I have gotten into a bad habit the last few days of sleeping in, but hubby and I are starting a business so we wake up at 7 pretty much always. Weekend, holiday, whatever, we always have stuff to do and we get more done if we get up earlier. So, that's not where the issue lies. I'm just a fun anomaly. Wink

are you sure the temps were wrong? My charts jump up and down a ton at the beginning of my cycle. Check my siggy and see what I mean. Then I have a big shift when I O where they jump up much higher and stay there for a while.

Yes it's normal for temps to move around a bit, they don't stay identical all month long. Again check my charts linked in my siggie and you will see, it's all normal to have slight differences

I temp vaginally because I sleep with my mouth open (attractive, I know) and I just found too much variance in temps when taking orally. I find the most variance for me now is related to restless sleep, and children waking up calling for me 45 minutes before my alarm wakes me up (which is set for 5am 7 days a week for consistent temp times). Not sure if your sleep is interrupted, but that may explain some of the variances too.

I only started temping when my son decided to sleep in his own room and either sleep through or wake just once, guess what he stopped doing soon after I was confident enough in my sleep to temp.

I'll just have to stick it out and see what happens. I'm actually thinking about doing both (I have 2 BBTs...I actually think I have 3 or 4...I keep losing them, lol) and tracking them on two separate accounts so I can see what happens. Thanks for your help ladies. Smile

I think that's a great idea. I've considered doing it but am so optimistic every month that I don't want to waste money on another bbt thermometer...9 cycles later maybe I should have !

I agree with others -- temps can be wacky up and down a lot -- that doesn't mean it's wrong Smile The key is to identify a sustained temp rise post ovulation which is above your personal coverline (essentially an average of the prior temps). Are you charting on paper or using a tool?

Stephanie - I try to check CM but when we are DTD a lot it's just not that clear for me. never checked cervix but no real need to on my end, temping is pretty darn accurate for me. I've only had one or two cycles where i've questioned it.

Yep me too
Although I agree with Mel, when doing the deed often then it's too much going on

I don't think I have anything new to add but the fan/window/heat shouldn't affect your temp unless they are enough to make you shiver or sweat in which case they are probably disrupting your sleep too. I set my alarm for 5am, use a thermometer that saves the temp, and just go back to sleep. I still miss temps due to my daughter waking up sometimes during the night but never because I get up early or late. Also, what the others said about the temps jumping around is very true! Please don't look at mine because I am very much an anomaly in that area. Smile I would stick with one method for a month or two, as long as you can get a coverline and O line you are good. Smile

Changing thermometers mid-cycle can also throw things off, if you happen to be losing them mid-cycle....

I've had the same one for a while now. It's been so long since I temped I guess I forgot how wacky they can be. I just looked at my old charts and it looks like they've always done that. I have 5 (yes 5...) different apps that I track in. lol. I had been using them to just track when my periods were while we were NTNP, but they all also have a function to track temps. I also do check cervix and CM, but they honestly can be completely off-the-wall also. I'm reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility now. I've had it out from the library for a month, but I've had this weird "semi-dyslexic" thing going on where I have been having trouble reading large amounts of text, but I was able to get through some of it last night.
