When you see someone you know out in public, do you always stop and say hello?
I thought about this today as I was walking through Lowe's. I saw the lady from the Safe Kids Coalition at the store. I kind of wanted to stop and say hi, but I've just met her twice and she was obviously there for a purpose, so I didn't say hi because I didn't want to pester her or interrupt her shopping.
I got to thinking though that I usually don't say hi to people. In fact, sometimes I go as far as to steer clear of them or avoid eye contact if we are in the same aisle. It may seem mean and antisocial, but I just want to get done with my shopping. I'm not one for small-talk.
Yup i am like u too. I dont mean to be antisocial and usually come off as mean.
This is such a good question! I'm curious how people will respond to this one.
I definitely don't like running into people I know unexpectedly, even if they are people I like or admire. It's usually incredibly awkward for me.
Pretty much the only people I know here are student pilots, instructor pilots, and their wives. I do say hi, even if it's a wave from down an aisle. I don't really like most people here, but I can be friendly and try not to piss off the IPs at the very least since they have a say in my husband's future. lol.
When I was home over the summer, if it was someone that I knew I did stop to say hi and see how they were doing. Most people were surprised to see me (of course) and it was nice doing a 5 minute catch up since I wasn't usually in a hurry anywhere.
My parents both grew up in small, rural, Southern communities. So while I've mostly lived in big cities, it's been hard for me to shake those small-town social obligations. I wave at my neighbors as I drive past them, even if I've never spoken to them before in my life. I would feel guilty if I didn't speak to someone I knew when I saw them.
Despite this, let me assure you that I'm very much an introvert and pretty shy. But my mother somehow wins this battle.

I usually say hi and chat for a minute if it's someone I am comfortable with whether I am close to them or not. If I am frumppy or on a mission, then I sometimes do try to avoid people rather than have to say hello. But for the most part I like running into people.
