    Default Consultation

So, we went to our initial consultation with the RE this afternoon. We got a lot of good information which was kind of surprising based on what my OB/GYN had told me previously.

The RE went over all of the OB/GYN's notes, but she had never sent over the pictures from the surgery. Luckily we had them with us. He took a look at the left fallopian tube (the only tube I have left) and said that it looked perfectly healthy. Now the OB/GYN had told me that she had attempted to shoot dye through the tube and nothing had come out and it didn't change color which means it's "non-functioning". The RE told me that this isn't always the case. Apparently just the trauma of the surgery can cause the fallopian tube to constrict naturally and not allow dye through. Soooo...I have to have an HSG test on my left tube. I asked about this test and he said "it's really uncomfortable". Great...hehe.

So on day 3 he wants to do another ultrasound to check my resting follicle count. I have to get more bloodwork for the FSH and estrogen levels...again. Then between days 5 and 12 I go in for the HSG test. Luckily day 1 of my cycle should be next Wednesday so I don't have to wait long to get this started. He said they'll know things within days so we can proceed.

If my tube is open we do a few cycles with clomid and IUI. If that doesn't work we go to IVF. If it's closed then it's obviously straight to IVF.

We also found out that insurance will cover all of this diagnostic stuff, but once we're diagnosed it doesn't cover meds or any fertility treatments. That's what we were expecting....

My OB/GYN had made it seem like the only option for us was IVF and that my tube was worthless. This guy has given me a very small amount of hope, but I'm not feeling too optimistic about the whole thing.

Sounds like you had a pretty good appointment. It also sounds like we are in the same place with waiting for day 3... I have blood tests then and day 1 I have to call to set up the hsg - my RE calls it the "horrible test". That is what he told me to book The last one I had done I was under general for my lap for endo. REs have so much more knowledge then regular OB/GYNs.

    Good luck!

I've been reading up on the HSG. It sounds lovely. I was so relieved when the OB/GYN said she could do a dye test while I was under for the laparoscopy I had a few weeks ago. I thought I would get out of having to do the HSG. Apparently not...hehe. I'm asking for a sedative...

I thought the hsg was just like a pap with a little more cramping. Also, I have heard it can increase your chances of fertility success the first
three months after. I had some cramping afterwards that day only but was fine. I didnt need anything but advil to get through it.

Also I have found REs very knowledgeable about infertility. There can be a lot of differences in their approaches.

Good luck. Sounds like you are both on your way.

Sounds like you got lots of answers at your appointment. I took some ibuprofen before my hsg and I'll be honest it wasn't very comfortable. I could feel a pinch when they clamped onto my cervix and I remember cramping during it. Afterwards I had some cramping that day and the next. There is a chance if your tube is blocked that the dye they inject can open it up. I'm glad your RE is doing his own diagnostic stuff instead of just relying on what your ob/gyn did. They each specialize in their own thing. That will be great if you can do a few IUI's and hopefully you will have success with that.

You guys are putting mind at ease about the HSG. Maybe not everyone has a horrific experience with it. I'm taking Ketoprofin during my AF because my cramps are so bad from the endo. Doc says to take one about a half hour before the procedure and that should make it more comfortable.

I'm also glad that he's not just taking the OB/GYN's word for it. I really really liked the RE. He had one of the best bed side manners I've ever had in a doctor. We also have our own nurse that we work with every single time. And we have the same insurance lady that helps us figure out the financials. I was really impressed with their whole set-up. I felt really comfortable.

Glad you seem to really like to your RE. That is so important as you will be working with them closely. That's neat that you get the same nurse also. I communicated with the same nurse but would have different nurses that would do my u/s. Some of them I didn't like so much. I would guess that if you have bad period cramps then these cramps wouldn't be much worse. I get bad period cramps also and they weren't too much worse than that.
